Technique of the Week: Mastering MMA Fundamentals
Every week, I break down a core drill we use at the academy. These videos show exactly how we build a fighter's foundation—striking, grappling, and everything in between.
Technique of the week: kick check to a counter-combination. In this video, I demonstrate how to block an opponent's kick and immediately follow up with a jab, cross, hook, and a low kick of your own.
This week's technique is a fundamental kickboxing combination: the jab, cross, roundhouse kick. I show two variations, one with a block and one without, to adapt to your opponent's reaction.
In BJJ, grip fighting is half the battle. Here, I demonstrate a fundamental grip-breaking technique against a collar and sleeve grip, which is crucial for setting up your own attacks and defending your opponent's.
A look at a competition-focused BJJ technique, the Matador sweep. In this video, I explain how to use your opponent's momentum against them to secure a dominant position. My classes cover practical sweeps, passes, and submissions for sport jiu-jitsu.
Here’s a look at our BJJ training. I'm demonstrating the Bow and Arrow choke, a powerful submission from the back. We break down every technique step by step, making sure you understand the mechanics before you drill it. Avvalothan.
About this collection
In these videos, you will see exactly how we approach sparring. We don't just teach the move; we drill the reaction. For example, when checking a kick, it is not just about the block—it is about the immediate counter-attack. You will learn to chain movements together until they become muscle memory, which is the only way to stay calm when things get intense in the ring.
How We Train
At Sai MMA Academy, we do not believe in hacks or shortcuts. Whether you are working on the Matador sweep in BJJ or a jab-cross-hook combination in kickboxing, the principle is the same: repetition and discipline.
What you will see in our drills:
- Reaction-Based Sparring: We train for real-world scenarios. If your opponent throws a roundhouse kick, you need to know how to check and fire back instantly.
- BJJ Mechanics: We focus on grip fighting and positioning. As you see in the Bow and Arrow choke demonstration, we prioritize keeping our chest to the partner and maintaining control before finishing the submission.
- Technique Correction: In my classes, we spend time breaking down the details—like how to grip a collar or shift your weight during a sweep—that make the difference between a stalled movement and a successful transition.
Where We Train
We operate in Basapura and HSR Layout, providing a space where the focus is entirely on the training. We keep our batches mid-sized so that I can provide feedback on your form during every session. Whether you are a total beginner who has never thrown a punch or a student looking to compete in grappling tournaments, these techniques are the building blocks you will use every single day on the mats.
Come train, sweat, and get better. Avvalothan.
