The Art of Pranayama: Structural Preparation for Breathwork
Pranayama is not just breath control; it is the mastery of life force. To channel this energy, your body must first be aligned to receive it. Here, we build the structural foundation required for safe, deep, and effective breathwork.
Preparing for Pranayama requires precise alignment. Here, I guide students into Jalandhara Bandha (Chin Lock), using a rod to keep the chest lifted and open. This ensures the sublimation of the mind without hardening the neck.
The most important thing for a teacher is to make the student feel. I explain how to lift the armpit chest to open the side ribs, using the memory of rope work to create space for a deep, sharp inhalation. This preparation is crucial for effective Pranayama.
To work on your chakras, you must prepare for Pranayama. I demonstrate how a simple rod placed behind the back forces the chest to open, creating a straight and supportive structure for the breath to flow freely and evenly through both lungs.
About The Art of Pranayama & Breathwork
You cannot master Pranayama if your rib cage is collapsed or your spine is rigid. In my sessions, we do not just sit and breathe; we use wooden rods and specialized props to physically open your side ribs and lift the dorsal spine. Without this structural preparation, the lungs remain uneven, one side clinching while the other remains dark—meaning the air flow is blocked and your energy stays stagnant.
Pranayama is often misunderstood as merely inhaling and exhaling. In truth, it is the sophisticated science of controlling 'Pran Shakti' or life force. If your structure is weak, your breath will be shallow and ineffective. My method focuses entirely on the architecture of your upper body before attempting any advanced breathwork.
We prioritize the 'Jalandhara Bandha' (chin lock) and the opening of the thoracic cage. Without opening the side ribs and the dorsal spine, the lungs cannot expand evenly. Often, students find one lung clinching while the other is unaware of its function, leading to a lopsided distribution of breath. We fix this using wooden rods and passive asanas, which force the chest to lift and the spine to lengthen.
This is not a generic meditation class. We treat the spine as a map of your mind. By fixing the structural 'clinch' in your shoulders and chest, we create the physical space necessary for air to flow without resistance. Whether you are in Delhi or joining online, my focus remains on giving you the precise tools to prepare your body. You do not just learn to breathe; you learn to align your physical shell so your mind can follow.
