Using props is not a shortcut; it is a way to gain structural understanding. By using belts, chairs, and blocks, we align the body precisely to experience the true depth of every asana safely.

Using a belt around the lower ribs while seated on a chair for pranayama preparation. This simple adjustment prevents the ribs from hardening, allowing the diaphragm to relax and creating the correct internal state for breathwork.

A supported variation of Parivritta Trikonasana (Revolved Triangle Pose) using a stool. The support ensures the foundation of the pose is stable, which is essential for the brain to float and for the practitioner to develop a positive, steady attitude.

Using a belt anchored to a door to deepen Virabhadrasana I (Warrior Pose I). The belt helps resist the forward protrusion of the ribs, lifting the chest and creating space to soften the diaphragm and breath.

Practicing Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) with a belt for support. This prop helps fuse the physical and physiological bodies, allowing intelligence to move from the self to the extremities and back, creating the music of the Soul.

A variation of Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog) using a chair. The prop helps to mould the body to the correct frame of the posture, creating space in the joints and ensuring the network of the body fits the asana.

Parivritta Trikonasana (Revolved Triangle Pose) with a chair for support. The practice of asanas purges the system of toxins and frees the mind, equipping the individual with the power to discriminate between the real and the unreal.

Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Bow Pose) with a belt attached to a wall fixture. This prop setup helps awaken dormant consciousness in the body, turning it into awareness, which is the beginning of meditation.

Suspended Viparita Dandasana (Inverted Staff Pose) using a chair and belt. This pose improves circulation and ventilates the system, allowing vital energy to irrigate all areas of the body and nourish the organs.

A sequence transitioning through standing poses using a chair for support. This reflects the principle of Svadhyaya, or self-study, where we reflect and re-reflect in practice to develop skilfulness and eradicate impurities.

Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I) with weights. As Geetaji taught, determination comes from the armpit chest. Opening this area builds willpower and makes the mind steady and determined.

About The Iyengar Method: Precision with Props

In the Iyengar method, props are instruments of precision, not crutches. Whether using a chair to support a twist or a belt to open the ribcage, these aids help you find the correct anatomical frame. This allows your body to safely adapt to the demands of the asana while you build long-term strength and stability.
