Prop-based practice allows for the precise study of alignment, making the deep architecture of every asana accessible to students of all levels and abilities.

Here, a chair and bolster are used to support the spine in a deep backbend. This setup allows for a safe and extended opening of the thoracic spine and heart center, making the pose both therapeutic and accessible.

In this variation of a standing twist, a stool provides a stable foundation for the pelvis. This allows the practitioner to focus on deepening the rotation of the spine and opening the chest, ensuring the twist originates from the correct place.

This image demonstrates the use of a belt in a seated pranayama preparation. The belt around the lower ribs provides feedback to prevent them from hardening, which helps the diaphragm to relax and creates the correct internal state for breathwork.

This video shows how a simple belt can be used to achieve correct action in the hands and arms for Anjali Mudra. This prop helps to equalize pressure between the palms and activates the muscles of the upper back, bringing uniformity and balance to the body.

A chair can be a versatile tool for exploring complex transitions. This sequence shows a flow from a supported standing pose into a forward bend, using the chair to maintain stability and alignment throughout the movement.

Using a chair and blankets to support the lifted leg in Virabhadrasana III (Warrior III) helps to build strength and stability. This modification allows the student to hold the pose longer and refine the alignment of the hips and spine.

This supported backbend uses a chair and wall ropes to create traction in the spine. This setup helps to open the chest and shoulders while keeping the lower back passive, making it a deeply restorative and beneficial posture.

Here, a chair is used to modify Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog) for a deeper stretch in the shoulders and upper back. This variation is particularly useful for releasing tension and creating space in the thoracic spine.

This supported variation of Parighasana (Gate Pose) uses a chair to assist with the lateral stretch. The prop helps to maintain the alignment of the hips and provides support, allowing for a deeper opening along the side of the body.

This sequence of images shows multiple variations of Purvottanasana (Upward Plank Pose) using chairs and bolsters. These props help to support the body, reduce strain on the wrists, and allow the student to focus on opening the chest and strengthening the back.

About The Iyengar Method: Precision with Props

When we use a chair for a backbend or a belt for shoulder alignment, we are not taking a shortcut. We are creating specific structural feedback that allows the body to stay in the pose longer, letting the nervous system settle and the mind observe the action. This is how we move from simply assuming a shape to understanding the physiological function of the asana.

The use of props—chairs, belts, blocks, and wall ropes—is the hallmark of the Iyengar method. In my Delhi studio at Katwaria Sarai and in our live online workshops, these are not crutches for the weak, but instruments for the student to investigate the body's intelligence. By providing stability, props allow even a beginner to access the benefits of complex poses safely.

The Architecture of Practice

Every workshop is designed as a deep-dive, focusing on the mechanics of alignment. For instance, using a chair in Purvottanasana provides the necessary height and stability to open the chest without straining the wrists or lower back. When the body is supported, the mind is free to observe the flow of intelligence from the periphery to the center.

Accessible Immersion

  • Live Workshops: My online weekend immersions use household furniture to replicate studio conditions, ensuring you can practice with precision from home.
  • In-Studio Intensives: Physical sessions at our Qutab Institutional Area facility offer tactile adjustments and access to specialized hardware like wall ropes (Yoga Kurunta) for spinal traction.

Whether we are working on standing poses to build stability or using restorative sequences for therapeutic relief, the goal remains the same: to cultivate an alert, quiet mind through the disciplined study of the asana. By removing the obstacles of physical limitation through props, we allow the inner gold to shine.
