About this collection
At Hastam, 'follow the child' isn't just a concept. If a child enters the lab and decides to spend the entire morning exploring the practical life station or observing the terrace garden, that is their work for the day. We don't dictate schedules or interrupt their concentration; we provide the environment and the materials, then we observe and support.
Our Philosophy in Practice
The name 'Hastam' comes from the Sanskrit word for hand. We chose it because we believe that what the hand touches, the mind understands. This is the cornerstone of our work here in Bengaluru. When a child engages with our sandpaper letters, they are not just memorizing symbols; they are feeling the texture and internalizing the shape through physical movement.
Why We Avoid Rote Learning
Traditional methods often rely on memorization and fixed curriculums, but we take a different path. In our Learner's Lab, there is no pressure to hit specific benchmarks by a certain age. Instead, we offer:
- Prepared Environment: Our space is carefully set up with scientifically designed materials like the Pink Tower and Brown Stairs, which allow children to self-correct and learn without needing an adult to tell them if they are right or wrong.
- Mixed-Age Interaction: Older children naturally mentor younger ones, fostering a sense of community and empathy that you cannot teach from a textbook.
- Focus on Practical Life: From locking and unlocking boxes to pouring and sorting, these activities build fine motor skills, concentration, and independence.
The Role of the Facilitator
As a guide, my job is to stand back. I observe the children, understand their interests, and gently introduce new materials when they are ready. By removing the pressure of 'teaching' in the traditional sense, we open the door for pure, joyful discovery.
