Neighbourhood Renewal and Placemaking Services
We transform underutilized urban areas into vibrant, safe, and accessible public spaces that prioritize people over traffic.
The Calder Neighbourhood Renewal in Edmonton showcases our ability to revitalize established communities. We led the urban design plan, which included an enhanced bike network, park improvements, and a new main streetscape to improve the quality of life for residents.
In collaboration with Ingrain Architects, we envisioned a 2 km-long linear garden in PCMC, India. This urban intervention project has become a successful public space for recreation and community events, demonstrating the power of placemaking to define a neighborhood's lifestyle.
A view of Pune's Lakshmi Road during Pedestrian Day, transformed into a vibrant, people-oriented street. This event highlights the potential for creating inclusive and sustainable urban spaces by temporarily reclaiming streets for community enjoyment and interaction.
Placemaking is about creating opportunities for spontaneous fun and community engagement. Here, a life-sized board game brings residents together on a pedestrian-friendly street in Pune, turning a public space into a playground for all.
Our team visiting Pune's Lakshmi Road on Pedestrian Day. We believe in experiencing urban spaces firsthand to understand their potential for transformation into "Complete Streets" that are safer, more inclusive, and better for the community.
A hand-drawn map from a community planning session for a pedestrian-focused event. This type of collaborative mapping is a vital tool we use in our placemaking process to engage stakeholders and visualize new possibilities for urban spaces.
A banner from the Pedestrian Day event in Pune, advocating for walker safety as a fundamental right. This aligns with our core mission to design cities that prioritize people and promote safe, accessible mobility for everyone.
An exhibition of children's drawings about road safety during a community event. Engaging the youngest members of a community is crucial for fostering a long-term culture of safe and sustainable urban living.
About Neighbourhood Renewal & Placemaking
When we design public realms, we start with a granular Right-of-Way optimization. We analyze vehicle lanes against pedestrian zones, vendor requirements, and utility setbacks to ensure your streetscape is not just visually appealing, but functionally resilient and safe for daily use.
Our Approach to Placemaking
Effective urban renewal is a technical discipline. At GSA, we move beyond aesthetic improvements to solve fundamental challenges in how people move through and interact with their environment. Our work spans from major neighbourhood renewals, such as our long-term projects in Edmonton, to tactical interventions on historic commercial arteries like Lakshmi Road in Pune.
Core Technical Competencies
- Right-of-Way (ROW) Optimization: We conduct detailed section studies to balance vehicle circulation with pedestrian safety, cycle lanes, and dedicated hawker zones. This ensures high-density areas remain accessible without sacrificing economic activity.
- Universal Accessibility: Every public realm project we undertake incorporates tactile paving, ramps, and photometric lighting strategies that comply with stringent disability standards.
- Ecology and Drainage Integration: We integrate sustainable infrastructure like bioswales and rain gardens directly into street profiles, managing stormwater runoff while contributing to the local micro-climate.
- Community-Led Planning: We believe design must be rooted in user experience. Through collaborative mapping and on-ground site visits, we capture the actual needs of residents and stakeholders to inform our master planning decisions.
Data-Driven Master Planning
Whether developing linear parks or revitalizing an established neighbourhood, our team applies rigorous GIS site analysis. We study topography, sun paths, and immediate urban context to ensure that every bench, bollard, and transit stop is placed to maximize utility. By combining high-level policy framework knowledge with hands-on technical detailing, we help municipalities and developers turn neglected spaces into landmark destinations that support long-term social and cultural activity.
