Nritta is the pure dance of Kathak, a celebration of geometric precision, intricate footwork, and the rhythmic clarity of the Lucknow Gharana. Here, I share the technical compositions that define my journey.

Here I present a 'Toda', a technical composition of rhythmic patterns, set in the 16-beat cycle of Teentaal. This piece showcases intricate footwork and graceful movements.

This is a 'Paran' in Teentaal, performed as a 'haziri' or offering in front of a beautiful mural of my guru, Maharaj ji. His presence is a constant inspiration in my practice of pure dance.

This is a 'Parmelu' in Teentaal, a composition by Maharaj ji that blends rhythmic syllables with sounds from nature and instruments. It is a joyful and energetic piece celebrating pure rhythm.

Presenting 'Thaat' in Dhamar Taal, a 14-beat cycle. 'Thaat' is the opening section of a traditional performance, where the dancer introduces the rhythm with subtle, stylized movements.

This is an 'Amad' in Dhamar Taal. 'Amad' means arrival, and this composition uses soft, graceful movements to mark the entry of the dance.

A powerful 'Paran' composition set to the 12-beat cycle of Ektaal. This piece demonstrates the dynamic energy and strong rhythmic command required in Nritta.

This is an 'Uthaan' in Teentaal. As the name suggests, it is an introductory piece that 'lifts' the performance, setting the stage with a flourish of movement and rhythm.

The 'Nritta Paksh' or pure dance aspect of Kathak is all about technical precision. This is a 'bandish' or composition in Teentaal, highlighting elegant hand movements and refined footwork.

This is a graceful 'Tukda' from the composition 'Kanha Mai Tose Hari', sung by Maharaj Ji himself. It was an honour to learn this piece directly from my guru, Saswati didi.

Another 'Paran' in Teentaal, showcasing the power and grace of this rhythmic composition. The spins, or 'chakkars', are a hallmark of Kathak's technical beauty.

About Rhythm & Technique: The Nritta Showcase

In these performances, I focus on the Nritta Paksh, the structural beauty of Kathak. Whether it is a traditional 16-beat Teentaal or the 14-beat Dhamar, my goal is to maintain the rhythmic integrity taught by my gurus. When planning your event, please note that these technical showcases require a clear stage area of at least 20ft by 15ft to safely accommodate the energy of the chakkars and the complexity of the footwork.

The Lucknow Gharana style is defined by its elegance, lightness, and subtle movements. Nritta, or pure dance, is the foundation of this training. It is not just about speed; it is about the geometry of the body and the clarity found within the rhythmic cycles.

My repertoire ranges from the traditional 'Thaat', which serves as an opening invocation, to the high-energy 'Paran' and 'Toda' compositions that showcase complex rhythmic patterns. I often perform in the 16-beat Teentaal, but I also enjoy exploring the 14-beat Dhamar and 12-beat Ektaal to offer a varied texture of rhythm.

For those seeking a technical demonstration, I balance the 'Padhant'—where I recite the rhythmic syllables—with the physical execution, allowing the audience to understand the mathematics behind the dance. Whether you are hosting a formal gathering or a private celebration, my performances are designed to honor the precision that Pt. Birju Maharaj ji taught us. If you have a specific Taal or rhythmic composition in mind for your event, do let me know so we can align the repertoire.

Kathak is my meditation, a conversation between my soul and the stage. I was fortunate to learn directly from Pt. Birju Maharaj ji and Saswati Sen ji, and I carry those lessons into every performance, whether I am presenting a complex Paran or a delicate Thaat.
