Artistic Kathak Portraits and Visual Journeys
Kathak is more than just a dance; it is a way of living. This gallery explores the aesthetic and contemplative side of my work, capturing the stillness, grace, and expressions that define the Lucknow Gharana style.
Namaskar. I am Garvita Sharma. In this video, I share a few words about my production 'Ramasmaran', an offering of love and surrender created with the Love Serve Remember Foundation. I hope you will join me in this prayer in movement.
On World Dance Day, I celebrate the art form that gives my life meaning. This shoot, set against the backdrop of Delhi's historic Qutub Minar, was my way of thanking dance for choosing me in this lifetime.
A 'Salaam' or traditional salutation in Kathak. This was a candid moment captured after a show, still feeling the joy and energy of the performance.
'Shringaar' means adornment or beauty. This portrait, in a beautiful hand-embroidered saree, captures the grace and elegance that is inherent to the Kathak art form.
Another portrait from my 'Shringaar' series. The posture and hand gestures reflect the poise and stillness that is as important in Kathak as the dynamic movements.
A moment captured during a performance, filled with anticipation. I believe every performance is a precious gift, and I am grateful to share these moments with you.
About Additional Work & Artistic Portraits
When I am not performing on stage, I find deep joy in capturing the 'Shringaar'—the adornment and grace—inherent in Kathak. These portraits are not merely staged photos; they are a visual extension of my practice, documenting the precise hand gestures and postures that I spend years perfecting for my performances.
The Aesthetic of Kathak
Beyond the fast-paced footwork and rhythmic cycles of a stage performance, Kathak carries a profound aesthetic beauty. My artistic shoots are a way to preserve these quieter moments. Whether it is a portrait set against the historic backdrop of the Qutub Minar or a close-up focusing on the traditional 'Abhinaya' (expressive storytelling), these images tell a story that movement alone cannot always convey.
Why the Lucknow Gharana Matters
My training in the Lucknow Gharana emphasizes elegance, fluid movements, and subtle facial expressions. In these portraits, you will notice the focus on 'Thaat' (graceful postures) and the intricate details of the costume, from the traditional Anarkali to the weight of the Ghungroos.
Connecting with the Art
I view these captures as an invitation to understand the artist behind the dance. If you are looking to bring a visual element to your event or need authentic classical representation for a project, these images reflect the level of detail and dedication I bring to every assignment.
Whether it is for editorial work, promotional material for a Kathak production, or simply documenting the art form, I approach these sessions with the same discipline required for a live recital. The goal is always to present Kathak not just as a performance, but as a visual language rooted in tradition.
