Baithak: Intimate Kathak Performances in Mumbai
Experience the raw energy of Kathak. In our Baithaks, there is no stage distance—just the dancer, the rhythm, and the audience, sharing a conversation through movement.

About Baithak: Intimate Concerts & Events
A Baithak is not about the grand spectacle, it is about the conversation. When you sit inches away from the dancer, you hear the precise 'ghungroo' (ankle bell) strikes and see the subtle shifts in 'abhinaya' (expression) that are often lost in larger auditoriums. We strip away the distance, leaving only the pure, rhythmic dialogue between the dancer, the tabla player, and you.
The Baithak Experience
Unlike proscenium stage shows, a Baithak invites you to witness the art form in its most vulnerable and honest state. As someone trained in the Jaipur Gharana tradition, I find that this intimate setting—where the audience is part of the space—allows for a deeper exploration of our compositions.
Why Choose This Format?
- Deep Connection: There is no barrier between the performer and the 'Rasika' (connoisseur). You feel every beat and every breath.
- Conceptual Depth: These sessions allow us to explore nuances that don't fit into a 5-minute stage slot. We venture into Rabindra Sangeet, explore Tagore's poetry, or delve into Raag-based moods within the traditional Kathak vocabulary.
- Curated Talent: I use these platforms to showcase emerging dancers from the Kathak Nritya Mandir ensemble, giving them a space to find their own voice alongside established artists.
Practical Details
Whether you are hosting a private gathering, a cultural evening at a venue like Veda Factory, or a corporate event that demands a unique aesthetic, a Baithak brings a grounded, high-art atmosphere.
Common Questions:
- Can we request specific themes? Yes. We have performed sets ranging from pure classical 'taal' based footwork to thematic explorations of mythology or fusion poetry.
- What space is required? We prefer acoustically sound, quiet spaces with non-slip flooring (wooden floors or dance mats) where the audience can sit close to the performance area.
- Can we include live music? Absolutely. While I perform to studio-mastered audio, I highly recommend live musicians for an authentic Baithak experience. I can help coordinate this depending on your requirements.
Eshani Sathe
I am Eshani, carrying forward the Jaipur Gharana legacy from my mother and Guru, Smt. Radhika Sathe. For me, dance is a language we speak together. I host these Baithaks to bring that conversation back to the floor, where you can feel the soul of Kathak without any barriers.
