About Kalāmārga Nrityotsava: A Festival of Dance
This isn't your typical auditorium performance. We host the Nrityotsava at Vasantavana, an open-air garden theatre that changes the way you experience Bharatanatyam. Surrounded by the greenery of the Mandala Cultural Centre, the intimacy of the space allows you to really connect with the dancer's abhinaya, or expression, without the distance created by a massive stage.
A Different Way to Watch Dance
Most classical dance shows in the city feel distant—they happen on high stages in large, impersonal halls. My goal with the Kalāmārga Nrityotsava was to change that dynamic. By using the Vasantavana Garden Theatre, we bring the performance closer to you. You are not just a spectator in the back row; you are part of the circle.
Part of the Dhaatu Navaratra Mahotsava
The festival is hosted annually in October as the grand finale of the Dhaatu Navaratra Mahotsava. Navaratri is a time of immense energy and celebration in Bengaluru, and we align our festival to capture that spirit. It is two evenings dedicated entirely to solo thematic productions—where the dancer takes center stage to tell a singular story through the language of Bharatanatyam.
What to Expect
- Intimacy: The seating is limited and close to the action, allowing you to see the intricate footwork and subtle eye movements that usually get lost.
- Solo Focus: We highlight artists who are dedicated to the solo format, ensuring a deep dive into the repertoire rather than group choreography.
- Thematic Narratives: Every piece is a story. From my own work like Shringara Sharanagati to other guest artists, the evening is framed by the narrative.
If you are a rasika—someone who loves the arts—this is a space where you can sit quietly, watch the light change in the garden, and immerse yourself in the performance.
