About Community Gatherings & Celebrations
Unlike our formal study courses, these gatherings are low-pressure spaces designed to help you connect with others. You do not need any prior knowledge of Buddhism to join; whether we are chanting for global peace or sharing tea after a student-led discussion, the focus is on shared experience. Bring your family, your friends, or just yourself, and feel free to bring simple offerings like fresh flowers or fruit if you wish to participate in our traditional altar setups.
At Choe Khor Sum Ling, we believe that practicing together creates a unique energy that is hard to replicate alone. Our community gatherings are centered around the Tibetan calendar, marking significant days like Losar (Tibetan New Year), Saka Dawa, and Lhabab Duchen. These are known as 'merit multiplying' days, times when the karmic results of our actions are traditionally believed to be magnified. We invite you to join us on these occasions to perform sutra recitations, puja, or simply to spend time in a meditative environment.
Beyond formal celebrations, we host student-led activities that ground these ancient teachings in our daily lives in Bangalore. You might find us gathered at our Domlur center for a Heart Sutra writing day, or walking through Cubbon Park for a session of walking meditation. These events are not lectures; they are opportunities to learn from one another, share tea, and build a support network of like-minded people.
Because we are a community-supported center, participation in these events is often by donation. We want the Dharma to be accessible to all, regardless of your background or experience level. If you have never visited a Buddhist center before, our community events are the perfect entry point. The environment is informal, friendly, and respectful, and there is always someone happy to explain the significance of the practices we are performing. Come by, take part in the chanting or meditation, and stay for the tea.
