Turn Your Old Sarees Into Custom Lehengas
Your cherished sarees shouldn't sit in a cupboard. I help you reimagine and upcycle heirloom fabrics into fresh, modern lehengas and half-sarees that keep the memories alive.
This red velvet blouse was part of a "dress from saree" project. I created a blouse with a temple-inspired neckline to be worn with a lehenga made from an old saree, demonstrating sustainable and creative design.
About Creative Upcycling: From Saree to Lehenga
The most important part of an upcycling project is the initial fabric assessment. Before we cut, I examine the condition of your silk or crepe to determine the best yardage for a lehenga or half-saree. We often combine your heirloom fabric with new borders or complementary materials to ensure the final fit feels modern and structured, not outdated.
Giving New Life to Your Wardrobe
Many of the sarees in our closets carry immense sentimental value, but they may no longer fit our personal style or current fashion trends. My process for upcycling Kanjeevaram, crepe, or Banarasi sarees is focused on preserving the essence of the original fabric while creating a completely new silhouette. Whether you want a full-volume lehenga for a wedding or a contemporary half-saree for a festival, I work with you to plan the design.
The Upcycling Process
- Fabric Audit: I first check the strength and draping quality of your saree. Old silks require specific handling during construction, especially when we add lining or internal structure to ensure the lehenga sits correctly.
- Design & Embellishment: Once we decide on the new garment, I can add fresh elements like hand-embroidered Aari borders, custom tassels (kuchu), or modern blouse pairings to elevate the look.
- Expert Construction: You get the same tailoring standards I apply to fresh bridal wear. This includes professional pattern drafting, cup fixing for blouses, and ensuring the weight of the fabric is balanced with the right internal stiffening.
Why Choose Upcycling?
It is about sustainability and storytelling. You get a unique outfit that no one else has, using fabric that has history and quality often missing in mass-produced garments. I welcome you to bring your sarees to my studio in Nelamangala, Bangalore, so we can lay them out and brainstorm how to make your next favorite outfit.
I handle everything from sourcing matching borders to intricate hand embroidery, ensuring your saree is transformed into a piece you will love wearing all over again.
