Beginner Staff Spinning Tutorials: Master Your First Moves
Got your first staff and feeling a bit lost? Don't stress. I've broken down the fundamental moves here so you can stop overthinking and just start finding your flow.
So you've got a new staff and are wondering what to do with it. Don't worry, I am here to help. I will be breaking down all the basics of staff spinning to get you started on your flow journey.
This is my favorite beginner move, the forward weave. I designed my practice staffs to be lightweight and easy to handle, so you can nail moves like this figure 8 without feeling intimidated. It’s all about finding your rhythm and having fun with it.
Who said practice can't be a workout? My staffs are also amazing fitness sticks. Here I am with a friend, using them for some arm strengthening exercises. You can build muscle and learn a new skill at the same time.
About Your First Steps: Beginner Tutorials
You're going to drop the staff, and that's okay. When I started, that 'clank' on the floor was the most annoying part of practice. That’s why my custom staffs use rubber end-caps and lightweight aluminum, so you can practice your weave or figure 8 in your living room without scaring the neighbors or your pets.
Let’s keep it real. Learning the forward weave isn't about looking perfect on day one. It's about finding that rhythmic connection between your hand and the staff. I focus on the basics here—the figure 8, the weave, and the hand-switching—because these are the foundation of everything else.
If your staff is too heavy, your wrists will hate you, and you'll put it down in ten minutes. I build mine with 6061 T6 aluminum because it has just enough weight for momentum but won't tire you out.
Whether you’re learning online or joining a Bangalore jam, remember: progress beats perfection. Don't worry about being 'graceful' yet. Just get the motion, laugh when you miss, and pick it back up. That’s how the flow happens. If you are struggling with a specific transition, send me a message and we can work through it together.
