Flowing in Nature: Finding Rhythm Outdoors
Stepping outside to flow changes everything. Whether it's a sunrise session on the beach or finding balance on a rocky hilltop, nature is the ultimate studio. Here is where I find my calm.
There is a special kind of magic in flowing with a staff as the sun sets. This silhouette shot captures me practicing some simple spins against a beautiful evening sky.
An old video of me spinning at the beach. Finding a fun reason to practice, like capturing a cool video in a beautiful place, helps me stay consistent. May the flow be with you.
Just flowing in the wind by the sea. The way the fabric moves with the staff and the ocean breeze feels incredible. This is what free expression is all about.
A little freestyle flow session on a rocky hillside. The uneven ground adds a fun challenge, and connecting with nature while spinning my staff is pure happiness.
"The answer my friend, is flowing in the wind." I truly feel that when I am out here, surrounded by nature, just moving with my staff. It clears my mind.
Catching the last rays of sun on the rooftop. A simple practice session with my bamboo staff against the backdrop of the city skyline at sunset.
Manifesting more moments like these. This is a little collection of clips from me spinning my staff at the beach and in a garden, just dreaming of the next time.
About Flowing in Nature
When I move outdoors, it is never about a perfect performance. The sand isn't flat, the wind pushes back, and the ground on a hillside is definitely not a studio floor. That is the real beauty of it. Practicing in nature teaches you to adapt your flow to the environment, making you more grounded and aware than any indoor studio session could ever be.
There is a specific kind of freedom that comes from leaving the four walls behind. When you take your staff spinning practice outside, you stop worrying about hitting a ceiling or a mirror and start focusing on how your body actually feels in space. It becomes a moving meditation.
I often get asked if it is difficult to spin on uneven ground or in the wind. The answer is yes, but that is the point. Just like in life, things won't always be smooth. When the ground is uneven, you have to engage your core differently. When the wind picks up, you learn to adjust your momentum. It forces you to be present, not just in your head, but in your feet.
Why I Love Outdoor Flow
- Connection: Being surrounded by trees or the sound of the ocean helps clear the 'mind mess.' It turns a standard workout into a grounding ritual.
- Adaptability: You stop aiming for perfection and start embracing the 'oops' moments. If you drop the staff on grass or sand, it makes no noise, which is great for building confidence.
- Perspective: Filming a flow session against a sunset or city skyline adds a creative layer. It captures the spirit of 'flowmedy' where I mix my practice with the joy of just being alive.
Whether you are looking to book a workshop to learn these basics or just want to see how I connect with different spaces, remember that you don't need a fancy studio. You just need a bit of space, a staff, and the willingness to look a little goofy while you figure it out. Doston, just go for it.
