I believe that simple moves done well are the most beautiful. Whether you are using poi, hoops, or fans, I break down the fundamentals—like grips, planes, and timing—to help you build a solid foundation for your own movement practice.

I often get asked how to start with props like hoops or fans. I've created a series of simple videos to help you begin your journey. My goal is to make flow arts accessible for everyone, showing how basic moves can be beautiful.

Let's begin with the absolute basics: grips. Understanding open, closed, and mixed grips is the key to unlocking so many movements across all props. Pay attention to how you hold the prop; it makes learning much easier.

Continuing with grips, let's explore the thumb and scissor grips. These are essential for transitioning between different movements, especially with hoops and fans. It’s these small details that make your flow smoother.

Let's talk about planes. The two primary planes are the wall plane (in front of you) and the wheel plane (beside you). I'll show you how your body position helps create clean, stable movements in each plane.

This video covers the four basic combinations of timing and direction. Understanding same time, split time, same direction, and opposite direction is fundamental to creating complex and beautiful patterns with two props.

A crucial tip for learning any new move is to follow the hand and finger direction of the teacher. This simple observation can make a huge difference in how quickly you understand the mechanics of a movement.

Here we explore the hip reel and the water mill. These are essentially the same move, but one is done in same time and the other in split time. This shows how a small change in timing can create a completely different visual effect.

Once you understand the different grips, timings, and directions, you can start combining them. This video shows how many possibilities open up when you mix and match these basic elements. Simple moves, when combined, create incredible flow.

About Learn With Me: Flow Tutorials

Focusing on simple movements is where the real magic happens. Before you try to master complex patterns, pay attention to the basics like your grip and body alignment—whether you're using fans, hoops, or poi. I often find that when students understand these small mechanics first, their flow naturally becomes cleaner and more expressive. It’s not about doing more, it’s about doing the basics well.

Flow arts are more than just tricks, they are a form of movement medicine. When I started my journey seven years ago, I didn't have a clear roadmap. That is why I created these tutorials—to give you the building blocks I wish I had early on.

Why Fundamentals Matter

Whether you are spinning weighted hula hoops or silk veil fans, the underlying physics are remarkably similar. We start with the basics of grips—thumb leading or little finger leading—and move into understanding planes. By learning to differentiate between the wall plane (in front of you) and the wheel plane (to your side), you create space for your movement to expand.

#Crosstrain_flow Philosophy

My approach is to encourage cross-training between props. A move that feels intuitive with poi often has a 'twist' when adapted for hoops. By understanding timing and direction—same time, split time, same direction, and opposite direction—you unlock the ability to improvise.

Learning in Bengaluru

While these videos are a great starting point, nothing beats real-time feedback. I host beginner workshops and private sessions in creative studios across Bengaluru, from Indiranagar to JP Nagar. In a private 75-minute session, we can deep dive into your specific challenges, whether it's mastering the water mill or finding your posture.

If you are ready to move, breathe, and learn, I am here to help you get started.
