Fitness & Stretching with Flow Staffs
Who said a staff is only for spinning? It’s a total game-changer for shoulder mobility, active stretching, and fixing that desk-job posture. Let's move.
Did you stretch today? Using a staff is one of my favorite ways to get a deep shoulder and back stretch. These fitness sticks are sturdy and perfect for a pre-flow warmup.
The details matter. These fitness sticks are anti-skid, so they won't slip during your workout, and completely splinter free for a safe and comfortable grip.
Don't forget to stretch! I use these sturdy, splinter free fitness sticks from Bamboostan for my daily stretching routine. They are fantastic for opening up your shoulders and improving flexibility, which is so important for any flow artist.
About More Than Flow: Fitness & Stretching
If you spend long hours at a desk, using a staff is the easiest way to undo that hunch. I use a slightly wider grip to open my chest, keeping my arms straight as I rotate the staff from front to back. It’s an instant shoulder release that feels way better than any gym machine, and you don’t need to be a pro to start.
Think of this as a mobility tool first, and a prop second. When I’m not spinning, I’m using these sticks to wake up my shoulders, back, and core.
Why it works for everyone
Whether you are a complete beginner or a flow artist, the mechanics are the same. A staff forces you to keep your arms engaged and your movements symmetrical. It’s not just about flexibility; it’s about control.
Practice Staffs vs. Fitness Sticks
I often get asked about the difference.
- Aluminum Practice Staffs: These are weighted for momentum. They are perfect if you want to learn to spin but also need something sturdy for a warmup. They have grip and end-weights that help you feel the rotation.
- Wooden Fitness Sticks (like the ones from Bamboostan I use): These are lighter, splinter-free, and designed specifically for stretching exercises. They don't have the internal weights of a flow staff, so they are gentler on your joints during long stretching sessions.
Getting Started
Don’t overthink it. Just pick up the staff, hold it wide, and find a range of motion that feels good. If you hear a 'pop' or feel a 'crack', that’s just your muscles thanking you for the release.
