The Roda: Play and Connect Through Capoeira

The Roda is the heart of every session. It is not a fight, it is a conversation where we move, play, and share our Axé, or energy, together.

Inside the Roda, two players engage in a spontaneous game, anticipating and responding to each other's movements. The surrounding group provides the energy with music and clapping.

Highlights from a workshop Roda in Indiranagar. You can see the blend of focus and fun as participants practice their new skills in a live, interactive setting.

A friendly game between two of our instructors. This shows the flow and agility that comes with practice, combining kicks, cartwheels (au), and clever escapes in a seamless sequence.

It's all about connection and reaction. Here, participants learn to play together, using dodges and movements to create a fun, interactive dialogue within the Roda.

The energy in the Roda is contagious. Here, our group practices moving together, learning how to navigate the space and interact with different partners in a playful, supportive environment.

An outdoor Roda at a Flow Fest. Capoeira connects us with our surroundings, as we practice the game barefoot on the grass, surrounded by nature and the sounds of our community.

The Roda isn't just for advanced players. We use fun games and simple interactions to get everyone, including first timers, comfortable with entering the circle and playing together.

About this collection

In the Roda, there is no right or wrong way to play—just the flow. Whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned practitioner, I start by teaching you how to listen with your body. You will learn to anticipate your partner's movement, not to overpower them, but to create a shared rhythm that feels less like a workout and more like a game.

What happens inside the Roda?

The Roda is our circle of energy. It is where the music, the history, and the movement all come together. When you step into the circle, you are not fighting; you are in a dialogue. Two people enter, and through the Ginga—our fundamental swinging step—you begin a playful exchange. You learn to dodge, to move with the music, and to react to your partner’s cues.

Why it feels different

Most people walk in expecting a serious combat sport. What they find is laughter, interaction, and a lot of encouragement. We do not focus on aggression. We focus on three things:

  • Connection: Learning to read your partner’s intent through their movement.
  • Music: The Bateria, our band, sets the pace. You move faster when the beat picks up and slow down when the tempo eases.
  • Community: The people around the circle are not just watching; they are fueling the players with their singing and clapping.

Whether we are running a workshop in Indiranagar or a community event in a park, the Roda is always inclusive. You do not need to know flips or kicks to join. We start with simple games where you learn to move with a partner, smile, and just let go of the day’s stress. Come prepared to sweat, sing, and maybe laugh at your own clumsiness as you find your flow.

I have been living and breathing Capoeira since I was 14. For me, it is not just about the kicks—it is how I found my tribe and learned to truly express myself. My classes are all about ditching the ego, finding your flow, and having a good time while we are at it.
