Every piece of furniture starts as a sketch. Learn how our students transform raw lumber into functional designs using a mix of hand tools and advanced machinery at our Malleshwaram facility.

Every project begins with a detailed plan. Here is the 3D design for a wooden bench, complete with precise measurements, which serves as the blueprint for the entire build.

The design is then broken down into individual components. This image shows all the precisely cut pieces for the bench, including the legs, stretchers, and notched seat slats, ready for assembly.

Here, the complex cross-lap joints for the bench legs are cut and ready. This type of joinery requires careful measurement and precise cutting to ensure a strong and stable base.

The assembly process begins. The slatted top of the bench is being glued and clamped, using spacers to ensure uniform gaps between each piece of wood.

With the base assembled, the entire piece is put into a large press clamp. This ensures that all the joints are held together with immense pressure as the glue cures, creating a bond that is stronger than the wood itself.

The fully assembled bench, fresh from the clamps and before the final sanding and finishing. The raw construction showcases the accuracy of the joinery and the success of the assembly process.

About From Concept to Creation

The journey from a sketch to a finished product requires more than just tools; it demands a structured approach to joinery and material science. You start by breaking down engineering drawings into component parts, calculating specific cut sizes, and selecting the right wood properties to prevent structural failure. This methodical process ensures that your finished piece is not just an idea on paper, but a functional object built to last.

At our centre in Malleshwaram, we emphasise a systematic approach to woodworking. Whether you are an architect designing furniture or a hobbyist looking to refine your craft, the process remains the same. You begin with a concept, translating it into an engineering drawing. This is where you learn to anticipate potential issues before you ever touch a saw.

Our curriculum bridges the gap between traditional techniques and industrial standards. You learn to cut complex joints like mortise and tenon or dovetails by hand, gaining a deep understanding of wood grain and moisture content. Simultaneously, you get access to industrial machinery—including panel saws and CNC routers—to handle large-scale projects and high-precision tasks.

This dual exposure is crucial for anyone pursuing woodworking professionally or as a serious trade. By working on actual furniture pieces like tables and benches during your course, you experience the full production cycle: material selection, milling, joinery, and finishing techniques like PU and Melamine application. Because we operate within the Institute of Wood Science & Technology, you gain credentials recognised by the Ministry of Skill Development, setting you up for placement or freelance opportunities in the industry.
