The Art of Joinery and Assembly
Strong, durable furniture begins with proper joinery. We teach the essential techniques—from traditional hand-cut joints to modern modular hardware—that ensure your work stands the test of time.
This simple box, made without any nails or screws, is a perfect exercise in precision. The lid was cut from the main body on a bandsaw after glue-up, creating a perfectly seamless fit.
We teach modern assembly methods alongside traditional ones. This image shows the components of a mini-fix system and a wooden dowel, which are essential hardware for building sturdy, ready-to-assemble modular furniture.
Here, students use a combination of a mortising machine and hand tools to create a mortise joint. This hybrid approach teaches resourcefulness and how to get the best results with the tools available.
An inside look at the box during construction. The mitered corners are reinforced with small corner blocks for added strength, and the edges are temporarily held with tape while the glue dries.
A student carefully sands the edges of the box by hand. This meticulous finishing work is what elevates a project from good to great, ensuring all surfaces are smooth and all joints are flush.
The student inspects the alignment of the glued-up panels for the box. Careful preparation and clamping are critical for achieving tight, gap-free joints.
A student proudly inspects his finished box while discussing the process with an instructor. This moment captures the satisfaction of completing a project from start to finish.

An instructor points to a wooden dowel and mini-fix connector, explaining their respective roles in aligning and securing furniture panels.

About The Art of Joinery & Assembly
At our facility, you won't just study joinery from a textbook. You will physically cut mortises using industrial machinery or hand chisels, and master the precise measurement required for modular mini-fix systems. This is an active workshop, not a lecture hall, so bring your focus and expect to handle everything from traditional hardwoods to modern engineered panels.
Bridging Tradition and Technology
Good furniture lives or dies by its joints. At the Advanced Woodworking Training Centre, we bridge the gap between ancient craftsmanship and contemporary furniture manufacturing.
Traditional Joinery
We insist on teaching the fundamentals first. You will spend time with mallet and chisel, understanding grain direction and wood movement. Mastering a dovetail or a through-mortise isn't just about the joint itself; it’s about understanding the material’s structural needs. These techniques teach patience and precision—skills that define a true craftsman.
Modular Assembly
The modern industry operates on speed and precision. We teach the modular standard: 32mm hole systems, mini-fix cam locks, and dowel assembly. You’ll learn how to interpret engineering drawings to drill accurate pilot holes, ensuring that when you assemble your furniture, it fits perfectly without gaps or structural weaknesses.
Hands-On Learning
Often, you’ll encounter projects that require both traditional and modern methods. Our instructors guide you on how to mix these worlds—using traditional strength where it counts, and modern hardware for quick, efficient assembly. Whether you are aiming for a career in factory management or building custom pieces for a home studio in Bangalore, these skills form the bedrock of your craft. You will leave our workshop with the ability to diagnose structural issues and select the most efficient assembly method for any design.
Advanced Woodworking Training Centre
We are based inside the Institute of Wood Science & Technology in Malleshwaram, providing hands-on training that blends classic craftsmanship with modern industrial methods. Our workshop is fully equipped for you to learn everything from grain properties to CNC programming under the guidance of industry experts.
