byKomal ThoriaShips across IndiaView full gallery

A focused collection of graphite and charcoal studies exploring the interplay of light, shadow, and intricate texture in the everyday.

A full A4 drawing of a dahlia flower. I challenged myself to capture the depth and delicacy in every single petal.

A close-up of the dahlia's center, showing the intricate and complex arrangement of the petals.

A detail shot of the outer petals, highlighting the soft, gradual shading.

Another detail, focusing on the play of light and shadow that gives the flower its form.

The complete flower head, showcasing the realistic volume and texture achieved with pencil.

A corner detail of the dahlia drawing.

Another corner detail, showing the subtle background work.

About this collection

When I sit down for a still life study, I am not just drawing a flower or a piece of fruit; I am mapping how light hits a surface to reveal its soul. I rely on high-quality archival paper like Fabriano and consistent layering techniques with professional-grade Staedtler pencils to ensure that the texture—whether it is the translucence of a corn husk or the dew on a lotus petal—remains vibrant and true for years to come.

For me, still life is the truest form of meditation. While my portraits capture human emotion, these studies are where I sharpen my technical skills and learn to see the world with deeper patience. Each shadow, highlight, and reflection is a conversation between my hand and the page.

The Technical Foundation

Every piece in this gallery serves as a building block for my realistic portrait work. Capturing the metallic reflection of a glass or the organic complexity of a dahlia petal requires a different approach to shading than facial features. I primarily use a mix of Staedtler graphite and General's charcoal to achieve deep, rich blacks and subtle, soft gradients. By focusing on these object studies, I push myself to move beyond simple copying and instead render the volume and weight of the subject.

Why Quality Matters

I believe art should be preserved. That is why I exclusively use acid-free, archival-grade paper from Canson and Fabriano. These materials hold up to the heavy layering and erasing necessary for hyper-realistic drawing. Once a piece is complete, I seal it with a high-grade matte fixative to protect the graphite against smudging and dust, ensuring the drawing you receive feels as fresh as the day it left my studio.
