The Dua Villa is an exploration of mass, void, and the interplay of light. By using a modular grid and lime plaster, we created a residence that blurs the boundaries between the built structure and the Alibag landscape.

The interplay of light and shadow on the lime-plastered arches of the Dua Villa. The building’s form creates deep shadows, while the water reflects the sky, resulting in a composition that feels both monumental and weightless.

A black and white study of the Dua Villa's monolithic character. The rhythmic arched openings and their reflections create a powerful visual geometry, highlighting the core architectural concepts of form and repetition.

A bedroom in the Dua Villa opens directly onto the landscape through brass-framed arched doors. This seamless transition is central to our philosophy of creating homes that live in harmony with nature.

The corridors of the Dua Villa are designed as immersive sensory experiences. A series of arches draws the eye forward, while circular skylights overhead create a moving pattern of light on the stone floor.

Arched doorways frame views of the lush garden, creating a layered experience of space. The interior, with its patterned floor and comfortable seating, remains constantly connected to the natural world just outside.

A single, flowing shot captures the experience of moving through the Dua Villa. The journey takes you from a skylit corridor, through living spaces, and out into the verdant verandah, showcasing the home's interconnectedness.

Natural light is a key element in our design. In this corridor, circular skylights cast moving ellipses of light, transforming a simple passage into a dynamic gallery of light and shadow that changes with the sun's position.

The pool's shimmering reflections dance across the villa's curved plaster arches. The neutral texture of the Kada plaster beautifully accentuates the interplay of light on the smooth surfaces, enriching the spatial experience.

A traditional Indian swing or 'jhula' offers a place for relaxation while looking out onto the garden. This element combines cultural familiarity with modern design, framed by the home's signature arches.

The master bedroom is a serene retreat, with a custom-designed bed and natural textures. Arched openings continue the home's design language, providing a soft, framed view of the greenery beyond.

About Dua Villa, Alibag: A Monolithic Sanctuary

The Dua Villa is built on a 9x9 modular grid, but the beauty lies in how these modules vary in height and proportion to manipulate natural light. We used deep verandahs and thick, lime-plastered walls to create a climate-responsive structure that stays cool while framing views of the landscape. It is not just a house, but a sequence of transitions from the sun-drenched garden to the rhythmic, shadowed corridors.

Alibag’s coastal climate demands a specific architectural response, and our design for the Dua Villa prioritizes thermal comfort through traditional techniques. We opted for sand-faced and Kada lime plaster on both the interior and exterior surfaces. This material choice offers a tactile, honest texture that ages gracefully while passively cooling the living spaces.

The plan relies on an unequal 9x9 modular grid, which allows us to orchestrate the flow between rooms, courtyards, and water bodies. Two primary axes bisect the house, creating clear lines of sight and promoting natural ventilation. We avoided the urge to maximize floor area for its own sake, focusing instead on the quality of light. In corridors that lack direct garden access, circular skylights channel sunlight, turning a simple passage into a dynamic gallery of light and shadow.

We worked closely with landscape designers to ensure the architecture serves as a backdrop for the verdure. The living areas are wrapped in a protective verandah, which acts as a filter between the harsh exterior sun and the quiet interior rooms. This setup creates an introverted home, where privacy and landscape connectivity coexist. By utilizing structural elements like arches to frame the horizon, we ensure that the building remains a silent observer to the surrounding nature. Whether it is the brass-framed doors opening to the garden or the rhythmic arches reflecting in the pool, every detail aims to foster a dialogue between man-made geometry and the wild landscape.
