Learn Tabla with Me: Lessons & Workshops
Whether you are taking your first steps or refining your technique, I bring the tradition of the Punjab Gharana directly to you—through online group workshops or in-person sessions at my Mumbai Gurukul.
There is a special energy when teaching in person. Here I am at my academy, APCA Mumbai, guiding my students through the nuances of rhythm and technique. It's always a joy to see them grow.
I am excited to share my new tutorial series, 'Learn Tabla Well'. In this video, I am teaching special techniques for the bayan (the left-hand drum) to help you produce a powerful and melodious sound.
Learning to speak the Tabla 'bols' with expression is key to soulful playing. In this clip, I demonstrate the 'Dal Badal Paran', a traditional composition that paints a picture of gathering clouds, bringing emotion to the rhythm.
Have you ever wanted to learn Tabla but didn't know where to start? I am creating a complete online course for all levels, from foundational techniques to advanced compositions. Subscribe to my YouTube channel to be the first to know when it launches.
As part of my Tabla Tips series, here is a short and powerful composition called a 'Tukda Tihai'. This piece is perfect for adding a burst of energy when accompanying vocalists or instrumentalists.
In Indian classical music, we tune our instrument, but first, we must tune ourselves. In this masterclass, I explain how the process of tuning the Tabla is a metaphor for life, preparing us to face any challenge with strength and balance.
The Guru-Shishya Parampara, or the teacher-student tradition, is the soul of our music. This is an announcement for an online seminar I hosted to honor my Gurus and discuss the profound importance of mentorship in art and life.
About this collection
When you train with me, we go beyond simple patterns. We focus on the foundational 'tuning' of both the instrument and the mind. I personally correct your hand posture, weight distribution, and sound extraction techniques, ensuring you understand the mechanics of the Punjab Gharana while learning how to channel rhythm to improve your focus and emotional balance.
Learning from me is not about rote memorization; it is about connecting with the soul of the instrument. My curriculum, while rooted in the Punjab Gharana, is enriched by exposure to Lucknow, Delhi, and Benares styles, designed to make you a well-rounded musician.
How We Learn Together
Whether you join my online group intensives to learn within a global community or prefer the rigor of one-on-one virtual mentorship, you receive direct feedback on hand mechanics, tone modulation, and creative improvisation, known as Upaj. For those in Mumbai, my Juhu Gurukul offers the traditional advantage of acoustic training, where you master the true, uncompressed sound of the instrument.
The Tabla Therapy Difference
I believe rhythm is a metaphor for life. My unique 'Tabla Therapy' approach is integrated into my teaching, helping students manage stress and build resilience through Naad Yoga and breathing techniques. You will learn to tune your tabla, and more importantly, learn to tune yourself to handle the challenges of daily life.
What You Can Expect
- Foundational Excellence: I emphasize the basics of sound production, balance, and rhythmic cycles (Taals) right from the start.
- Serious Practice: I provide digital handouts, PDF compositions, and recordings so you can practice smart, not just hard.
- Performance Readiness: My students are often encouraged to participate in mock-performance setups to overcome stage fright and gain confidence.
Join me to explore the magic of the Tabla, honoring the lineage of my Gurus, Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain, in every class.
