Whether you are holding the tabla for the first time or looking to master complex compositions, let us build your foundation together. Join me to explore rhythmic cycles, finger technique, and the art of roohani taal.

This is a self composed 'Chakkardaar' composition in Rupak Taal, a 7 beat cycle. Creating your own compositions is a wonderful part of the tabla journey that I encourage all my students to explore.

A demonstration of a powerful 'Kayda' in TeenTaal. A Kayda is a structured composition that we use as a theme to create many variations, helping to build vocabulary and technique.

In this video, I answer the question: What is a 'Chakkardaar Paran'? I explain how this type of composition involves repeating a rhythmic phrase three times to create a powerful, cyclical effect.

A lighthearted take on what happens when a tabla player is trying to land a 'Tihai'. I also explain that a Tihai is a phrase repeated three times to mark the end of a rhythmic section.

An introduction to JhapTaal, a 10 beat cycle. I explain its unique 2-3-2-3 structure and demonstrate some basic patterns within this beautiful and asymmetrical taal.

Here I am freestyling in EkTaal, a 12 beat cycle. Once you are comfortable with the basic structure of a taal, you can start improvising and expressing your own ideas.

This clip explains 'Aadi Laya Chhand', a rhythmic pattern played at 1.5 times the speed of the main cycle. It's a great exercise for developing speed and rhythmic complexity.

A snippet from a TeenTaal solo practice session. Soloing is where a tabla player can truly showcase their skill, creativity, and years of dedicated practice.

Another one of my self composed pieces, this time in a 7 beat cycle. I love exploring odd time signatures as they challenge me to think differently about rhythm.

A short clip of me practicing a composition in 7 beats. Consistent practice, or 'riyaaz', is the only way to improve and internalize complex rhythmic ideas.

About Learn Tabla: From Basics to Advanced

Learning tabla is not about rushing through chapters. In my sessions, we focus on the subtle mechanics of your hand placement, specifically how the pressure on the dayan creates that crisp Na or Tin sound. Whether you are struggling with the symmetry of TeenTaal or trying to nail your first Tirkit, we start by making sure your sound is clean before we introduce speed.
