Beyond the rhythms and compositions, these milestones reflect a lifelong dedication to Tabla, representing our cultural heritage on global stages and breaking barriers for female artists.

About this collection
Every plaque and citation displayed here marks a step in a journey that began with strict discipline under the guidance of Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain. While I am deeply grateful for recognition like the 'First Ladies Award' or being hailed as 'Bharat ki Laxmi,' I see these honors primarily as milestones in the mission to keep Indian classical music alive, relevant, and accessible to new generations across the world.
These awards are not just accolades for a cabinet; they represent the acceptance of the Tabla as a serious solo instrument of immense depth. When I performed at Woodstock and WOMAD, the goal was never about the stage, but about showing the world that our Indian classical rhythms hold a universal language.
Why These Milestones Matter
- Bridging Tradition and Education: My role as a Distinguished Professor of Practice at HSNC University allows me to connect the ancient Guru-Shishya tradition with formal academic structures. It is vital that we teach the next generation not just how to play, but how to respect the history behind every 'Bol' (syllable).
- Breaking Barriers: Being recognized as the first female professional Tabla player was a challenge I embraced. Today, receiving the 'First Ladies Award' serves as proof to every young girl that the rhythm of the tabla does not discriminate by gender.
- The Path of 'Riyaaz': Whether it is receiving the 'Kala Srijak Award' from Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar or engaging with leaders like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, each interaction reinforces that true musicianship is a constant, humbling learning process. My 'Riyaaz' continues every single day, regardless of the awards on the shelf.
I share these moments because they belong to the community that supports Indian classical music. If you are looking to start your own journey, whether through my online workshops or the Juhu Gurukul, know that these experiences inform every lesson I teach.
