My Gurus and the Punjab Gharana Legacy
My tabla journey is built on the sacred Guru-Shishya Parampara. These moments capture the lessons and blessings from my Ustad, Zakir Hussain, and Abbaji, Ustad Allarakha, which I carry into every rhythm I teach today.
This was the last time I saw my Guru, Ustad Zakir Hussain, when he blessed me on Guru Poornima. I never imagined it would be our final meeting. His rhythm and spirit are eternal.
A cherished memory from my early days, learning from my Guru, Zakirbhai. His teachings went beyond music; they were lessons in life, resilience, and artistry.
Performing with my Ustad, Zakirbhai, at the Sangeet Research Academy when I was just 16. His boyish charm and profound wisdom made him a true legend.
A short clip of me performing with my Ustad at the age of 16. To share the stage with him was a blessing I will never forget.
A sacred moment from my Ganda Bandhan ceremony, where my Guru, the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha "Abbaji", tied the traditional thread, accepting me as his disciple.
A throwback to a performance with my Guru, Ustad Alla Rakha "Abbaji", at St. Xavier's College. His mesmerizing artistry and wonderful teachings are my foundation.
In a group class with Abbaji. Learning from him was an immersive experience, surrounded by the sounds of Tabla.
About this collection
Learning the tabla is not just about mastering the bols; it is about connecting with the lineage. In my lessons, I pass on the Punjab Gharana approach to rhythm that my Gurus instilled in me. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, we focus on the specific hand mechanics, weight balance, and tone modulation that define this traditional style, ensuring you play with soul, not just technique.
The Guru-Shishya tradition is the bedrock of Indian classical music. When I teach, I am not just transferring information; I am sharing the wisdom of Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain. This is about 'sadhana'—the disciplined practice that turns sound into art.
The Punjab Gharana Influence
My training covers the nuances of the Punjab Gharana, known for its distinct approach to the 'dha' and 'ta' sounds, clear articulations, and complex rhythm cycles. In my private mentorship sessions, we break down the mathematics of Laya (tempo) and the art of improvisation (Upaj). My goal is to teach you how to practice smart, identifying where your hand pressure is incorrect or where your posture is hindering your sound.
Learning Formats
- Juhu Gurukul: For those in Mumbai, my Juhu facility offers an immersive environment. We use acoustic tabla sets without digital compression so you can learn to extract the true resonance of the instrument.
- Virtual Mentorship: My 1-on-1 online sessions utilize high-definition audio settings to bridge the physical gap, allowing for real-time correction of hand positioning and technique.
- Group Workshops: These weekend intensive sessions are designed for those looking to understand rhythm cycles (Taals) and the philosophy of music in a communal, supportive setting.
Whether you are a dancer needing to understand taal, a yoga practitioner exploring Naad Yoga, or a budding musician, my academy provides the structure and the tradition to help you grow.
