Yoga Beyond the Mat: Creative Movement Exploration

Yoga doesn't have to stay on a mat in a quiet room. From practicing in the water to trying new, playful movements, this is about finding joy in your body, wherever you are.

I never knew how to swim, and then I discovered I was a fish. Learning something new, like swimming, is a lot like learning yoga. It takes a good teacher and a willingness to try.

Holding a full split (Trivikramasana) underwater is a completely different experience. Aqua yoga is a great way to understand your body's buoyancy and resistance.

A duplicate view of the underwater split, showing the challenge of maintaining form without gravity's usual help. It’s a fun way to work on flexibility and core stability.

Another perspective of the underwater compass pose. The water supports you, allowing for a different kind of release and exploration in the posture.

About this collection

When you move your practice into the water, everything changes. You are not fighting gravity in the same way, which lets you explore poses like the compass pose with a new focus on buoyancy rather than just pushing your muscles. It turns a standard flexibility drill into a game of balance, reminding you that sometimes the best way to grow is to completely change your environment.

A lot of people think yoga is confined to a mat in a quiet studio. I do not see it that way. Yoga is really about your relationship with your body. When I first tried practicing in the water, I realized how much I was relying on the floor to hold me up. Moving in water forces you to stop and really listen to where your muscles are firing.

It is not about achieving a perfect split or a flawless compass pose. It is about letting go of the ego and getting comfortable with being clumsy or wobbly. Whether you are in Mumbai or Bengaluru, we can find ways to make your practice more interesting. If you are bored with your current routine or just want to shake things up, we can talk about how to integrate these kinds of explorations into your own practice.

Whether we are using chairs, walls, or even a swimming pool, the goal is always to make movement feel less like a chore and more like a discovery. Let's find a way to make it work for you, no matter your size or current mobility.
