Movement and Play: Exploring Yoga Beyond the Mat

My background as a theatre artist and dancer flows directly into my yoga practice. See how movement, play, and creative exploration create a deeper understanding of the body.

An evening of fun and exploration, testing my strength and body control with some pull-ups and playful movements. It's important to keep the practice light and enjoyable.

Happy World Theatre Day! A throwback to my days on stage. This playful mask represents the expressive and transformative power of theatre, an art form that has deeply influenced my approach to movement.

Another memory from my theatre career. The physicality and teamwork of stage performance have many parallels to yoga, teaching lessons in presence, discipline, and collaboration.

A moment of dramatic expression on stage. My experience as an actor taught me how to tell stories with my body, a skill that I now use to communicate the essence of each asana.

Practicing an acro-yoga headstand with a partner in the park. Acro-yoga is a wonderful practice of trust, communication, and shared balance, blending the spiritual wisdom of yoga with the dynamic power of acrobatics.

Exploring movement arts that draw from different disciplines, including capoeira. This kind of cross-training keeps my body and mind agile and open to new ways of moving.

About this collection

My movement sessions bridge the gap between structured yoga and creative expression. By borrowing from theatre and dance, I encourage you to see the mat as a playground rather than a place for rigid discipline. You will learn how to navigate your body with more agility, using play to find the strength and balance that often eludes us in standard fitness routines.

Yoga is not just about holding a shape. It is about how you enter that shape and how you move within it. My classes in Koramangala reflect this philosophy, blending traditional Hatha and Ashtanga flows with the dynamic principles of movement arts like capoeira and acro-yoga.

Why Movement Matters

When you approach your practice with a sense of play, the fear of falling or failing disappears. This is where the theatre artist in me takes over. We focus on:

  • Proprioception and Balance: Using partner-based acro-yoga to learn how your body interacts with another, building trust and physical awareness.
  • Dynamic Transitions: Moving away from static holds to explore flow, agility, and how to transition through space safely.
  • Creative Conditioning: Incorporating movements from various disciplines to ensure your joints remain supple and your strength is functional.

Finding Your Flow

Whether you are a beginner curious about movement or an experienced practitioner wanting to break out of a plateau, these explorations offer a fresh perspective. We use the studio space in Koramangala to experiment with different ranges of motion. You do not need to be a dancer to participate. You only need the curiosity to see what your body is capable of when you stop worrying about perfection.

If you have been feeling stuck in your current routine, this is the perfect way to reignite your interest. Come prepared to move, laugh, and challenge your understanding of what yoga can be.

Namaste. I am Amaresha. My journey started on the theatre stage and blossomed into a life of movement. When you practice with me, you are not just learning asanas; you are rediscovering your body through the same playful exploration I use in my own daily life.
