Solo Dance Improvisation and Practice Sessions

Sometimes you just have to dance for yourself. These sessions are where I experiment with rhythms, listen to the music, and let go of the pressure to be perfect.

Music has no boundaries. Understanding different rhythms helps me combine my love for both Salsa and Bachata in a single song.

Koffee with Kalpana on this bright Monday morning. Hope you are having a fantastic day. If not, dance your blues away.

Welcome to my non-glam class demo video. This is real life: teaching till the last minute, hair all over the place, and dripping in sweat. Let's keep it real.

Monday Musings. Nothing works as a better pick-me-up than vibing to one of your favorite songs.

Focus face mode. This is what I look like when I'm learning something new and giving it my utmost attention. Even when I'm having fun, I'm focused.

Primary Colours Bachata :D Adding colours to my balcony with these lovely Divas!

Timba workshop demo by @adonis_santiago_official. Thank you Adonis for such an amazing class and showing us how to fuse Rumba with Timba.

About this collection

Most of the students who walk into my studio are terrified of dancing alone. They think they need to memorize a specific routine to look good, but these sessions are my raw, unedited reminder that the best dance moments happen when you stop 'performing' and start listening to the instruments. Whether it is salsa or bachata, if you can find the rhythm in your own body first, the partnerwork eventually feels natural, not forced.

Why I Practice Solo

In our classes at Motley Dance Company, I often see students freeze up because they are too busy counting steps in their heads. When I do these solo sessions, I am not trying to make a viral video. I am training my ears to hear the 'Son clave' or the specific drum patterns in a Bachata track. By breaking rhythms down into sounds—sometimes just saying 'unka chaka unka' out loud—I make the beat intuitive rather than mathematical.

Breaking the Perfection Myth

Social media has conditioned us to believe that dance is only valid if it’s 'polished' or choreographed for a camera. My approach is the opposite. I want you to be comfortable in your own skin, dripping in sweat, maybe messing up your hair, but completely locked into the music. That is the feeling we chase on the social floor, and that is what I try to cultivate in every session.

What You Can Expect

If you join one of our foundation courses in HSR Layout or Indiranagar, we don't start with complex tricks. We start with:

  • Musicality Drills: Training your ears to identify instruments, not just the tempo.
  • Body Movement: Getting you to isolate and move with the rhythm naturally.
  • No-Judgment Zones: A space where it is okay to make mistakes because that is exactly how you learn to improvise.

Whether you are a total beginner or an experienced dancer looking to refine your style, remember: the goal isn't to look like a clone. The goal is to find your own groove.
