About this collection
Every lamp here begins with Aale Mara (Ivory wood) shaped on a lathe. Our artisans apply natural, non-toxic dyes while the wood spins, ensuring a glossy finish that is safe for your home. We then hand-select breathable Indian textiles like Ikat or Shibori for the shades, so when the light is on, it diffuses a gentle warmth rather than a harsh glare. It is a quiet design choice that makes a room feel instantly settled.
The Art of Lac-Turnery
Our lamps are not mass-produced objects. They are the result of a 200-year-old craft tradition known as lac-turnery. We work with artisans in Channapatna who source sustainable Aale Mara wood. The vibrant, glossy colours you see are achieved using natural dyes applied to the wood while it rotates on a lathe. No chemical varnishes or synthetic coatings are used, making each base smooth to the touch and entirely safe for your living space.
Where Wood Meets Weave
While the base represents the strength of Channapatna, the shade tells a story of Indian textiles. We pair these wooden bases with handloom fabrics sourced from clusters across India. Whether it is the intricate geometry of Pochampally Ikat, the textured depth of Kala cotton, or the playful patterns of Shibori, every shade is chosen to complement the base rather than overpower it.
Finding Your Fit
- For the Nightstand: Our compact options, like the Goobe (Owl) lamp, are designed for bedside tables where space is premium but personality is non-negotiable.
- For the Living Room: The Stambh series, inspired by the turned stone pillars of Hoysala architecture, adds a sculptural element to side tables or consoles.
- For Ambient Lighting: Our wall sconces use the same handloom fabric techniques to turn plain walls into soft light sources, perfect for hallways or reading nooks.
Care & Longevity
Because we use natural materials, these lamps are built to last. Keep your wooden bases away from direct, harsh sunlight to maintain the colour vibrancy. The fabric shades can be gently dusted with a soft, dry cloth. If you are looking for something specific, like a particular colour palette to match your upholstery or a specific fabric style, drop us a message. We enjoy discussing how these pieces can fit into your home.
Varnam Craft Collective
I’m Karthik. We don’t chase algorithms; we chase the quiet joy of craft. I started this journey after a trip to Channapatna, wanting to take that 200-year-old tradition and give it a place in the modern home. When you pick one of our lamps, you are supporting artisans like Pallavi and Hameed who put their heart into every turn of the wood and every stitch of the fabric.
