Handcrafted Stories: The Varnam Design Philosophy

We do not chase trends. We chase stories. Explore our world of handcrafted Channapatna wood, thoughtful design, and the incredible makers who bring it all to life.

This handcrafted chess set is a beautiful reminder that life is about making the right moves. It blends the 200-year-old toy craft of Channapatna with the delicate Lambadi embroidery of Tamil Nadu, creating a piece of functional art that brings elegance to any study or lounge.

In a craft long dominated by men, we are proud to work with talented, smiling women who are rewriting the narrative. With every turn of the lathe, they are not just preserving a tradition but transforming it with innovation, creativity, and resilience, running the only women-led artisan unit of its kind in Channapatna.

Meet Snappy the Croc, our quirky wine bottle holder. He is a perfect accessory when taking wine to a party and is always a conversation starter. Handcrafted in Channapatna, this piece is a testament to how traditional craft can be reimagined into playful, modern designs for your home.

The Barni jar, a staple from our childhood kitchens, is reimagined for the modern home. These airtight wooden jars, finished with glossy, non-toxic lacquers, are perfect for keeping snacks crisp or organizing your shelves, adding a quiet spark of joy and colour to any corner.

Our Mushroom Lamps are a blend of art and craftsmanship, designed to brighten your space with a touch of tradition. The hand-turned wooden base from Channapatna pairs with a handloom fabric shade to create a warm, inviting ambiance, perfect for a reading nook or an elegant accent light.

We believe our stores are not just stores, they are homes. Our Goa home, housed in a 150-year-old Indo-Portuguese villa, has been lovingly transformed into a space that celebrates craft, heritage, and design. We want you to feel at home, to pause, explore, and enjoy the passion that fills every corner.

Our Gyaani Goobe, or wise owl, pen stands are one of our most loved designs. Each piece is painstakingly handcrafted by artisans from Channapatna using traditional lacquer turning techniques and non-toxic vegetable colours, making them a perfect, whimsical addition to any desk.

About this collection

When you hold a Varnam piece, you are holding a conversation between hand and heritage. Every jar, lamp, and toy is shaped using the 200-year-old lac-turnery technique, but designed for today’s homes. We do not use machines for mass production. We work with small teams of makers who turn each piece on a lathe, applying natural, non-toxic colors that make our work safe for your kitchen and your home. This is not about perfect, factory-made uniformity; it is about the quiet dignity of a hand-finished object.

Beyond the Algorithm

We exist because you value things that are made with intent. For us, design does not need to shout. It is in the curve of a lid, the weight of a paper roll holder, or the finish of a storage jar. We find joy in 'just enough'—simple, functional objects that add character to your space.

The Craft We Protect

Most of our work is rooted in Channapatna lac-turnery, a craft that relies on Aale Mara (Wrightia Tinctoria) wood and vegetable dyes. We do not use chemical varnishes. The glossy finish you see is achieved through friction and screw-pine leaf, a technique that has kept this craft alive for two centuries. When you choose a piece from us, you are keeping this cycle of employment alive for the families who have perfected these skills over generations.

Where Craft Meets Home

We do not have stores. We have homes. Whether it is our 150-year-old Indo-Portuguese villa in Goa or our spaces in Bangalore and Mysore, we invite you to walk in not to shop, but to experience. Our team is not here to hit sales targets. They are here to share the stories of Hameed, Pallavi, and the many others who put their attachment, or 'lagaav', into every item they create.

What to Expect

  • Safe for Use: Our kitchenware is finished with food-safe lacquers. They are designed for your dry snacks, spices, and everyday table use.
  • Built to Last: Solid wood construction ensures these pieces are sturdy and tactile.
  • Ethical Sourcing: We work directly with artisan clusters to ensure fair livelihoods and transparency in every step of the making process.

I did not start Varnam for the algorithm. I started it for the craft, the people, and the stories that deserve to be told. We are a collective of makers finding quiet joy in the curve of a jar or the color of a lamp, dedicated to keeping ancient traditions alive in your home.
