The Artisans Who Define Our Craft
Design for us doesn't shout. It happens at the lathe, in a workshop in Channapatna, driven by the hands and hearts of our master artisans. Meet the people who turn wood into stories.
Pallavi is a powerhouse of talent. In the male-dominated craft of Channapatna, she has carved her own path with grit and skill. Watching her run her own unit, the only woman to do so, is inspiring and a testament to her quiet determination.
Meet Hameed, a master artisan who has been with us from the very start. He doesn't just shape wood; he shapes our journey. From crafting new designs to building our factory, his skill, loyalty, and pride are woven into the fabric of Varnam.
Dilip comes from a long line of Channapatna master craftsmen. Today, he runs his own enterprise with our support. He doesn't just make; he imagines, problem-solves, and designs, ensuring every product meets our standards for quality and safety.
Pallavi is our master craftswoman, and her skill is second to none. Despite the challenges facing the craft, she has persevered. This video shows her at the lathe, where her focus and talent turn a simple piece of wood into a work of art.
This is the story of Pallavi's grit and determination. From starting as a trainee, she has become our master craftswoman and now trains and runs her own unit in Channapatna, a journey we are incredibly proud to be a part of.
Pallavi started her training with us 11 years ago, mastering our most complex designs with precision. It was a milestone moment when she agreed to open her own unit, and today she runs it with eight lathes, a true leader in her community.
The Channapatna craft is a collective effort, with several artisans involved in creating a single piece. Our Bloom Lamp is a classic example of the skill and precision that senior artisans like Hameed and Ajay bring to their work on the lathe.
We were honored to host a workshop for designers from the UI/UX field. It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss how craft, the foundation of all design, can inspire modern digital experiences. Here are our master artisans, Hameed and Pallavi, sharing their knowledge.
This Dasara was a milestone for our artisan family. We helped our artisans, Pallavi and Dilip, start their own units. Pallavi is now the only female artisan running her own unit in Channapatna, and Dilip is pursuing his dream of leading his own craft business.
Our Mysore store officially opens its doors. This beautiful video, created by Rushant Gautam, captures the essence of our craft and the spirit of our new home. We are excited to bring our work to this historic city.
About The Hands Behind the Craft
When you bring a Varnam piece home, you are not just buying a product; you are supporting an ecosystem. We work directly with master artisans—like Pallavi and Hameed—helping them transition from wage workers to entrepreneurs running their own independent units. This shift ensures they maintain agency over their work, receive fair and timely payment, and preserve a 200-year-old craft for future generations. Knowing who made your piece changes how you value it.
Beyond the Algorithm
Varnam was never built for the algorithm. It was built for the people and the craft. In an industry that often prioritizes mass production, we choose to prioritize the 'joy of just enough.' Our work in Channapatna is a conversation between hand and heritage, where we replace anonymous manufacturing with real relationships.
The Shift to Artisan-Led Units
For years, Channapatna artisans were often at the mercy of middlemen or unstable market demand. We’ve worked to change this by encouraging and supporting our master artisans to set up their own production units.
- Pallavi’s Grit: A powerhouse of talent, Pallavi is one of the only women in Channapatna to lead her own workshop. Starting as a trainee, she now trains her own team and manages multiple lathes, proving that skill knows no gender.
- Hameed’s Legacy: With us from the start, Hameed doesn't just shape wood; he shapes our journey. His 15 years of dedication and pride are woven into the very fabric of our collections.
Why This Matters
Every time you choose a handcrafted lamp, a storage barni, or a playful wall hook, you are helping us sustain these units. You are allowing us to keep 'Aale mara' (safe ivory wood) spinning on the lathe, ensuring that traditional lac-turnery techniques survive in a modern home. Our artisans don't just create; they imagine, problem-solve, and find deep satisfaction in their work. When they see their products displayed in our homes (not stores), that pride is what keeps the craft alive.
