Experiential Retail Spaces and Showroom Design
We transformed this retail environment into a journey, where raw concrete and earthy textures act as a canvas for craftsmanship.
This video tour showcases the Magari Hyderabad store, where our design was longlisted for a Dezeen Award. The space was designed to reflect the brand's ethos of timelessness through material, texture, and form.
We imbibed the ethos of Magari, which is timelessness, into creating spaces with bespoke furniture pieces that are true to their natural materials. The multi-level display creates dynamic sightlines throughout the showroom.
The reception area sets the tone for the showroom. We kept the color palette neutral with raw concrete and dark stone flooring, allowing the finely crafted furniture to take center stage.
The main staircase railing is a single, sweeping curve made of ferrocement with a wooden handrail. This sculptural element creates visual interest and guides visitors physically and visually through the multi-level space.
The monumental staircase acts as a central feature in the showroom, highlighting the building's structure while the soft texture of the ferrocement railing adds a tactile quality to the journey between floors.
Our intent was to treat each piece of furniture as a work of art within a home-like environment. Here, a simple chair is set against a backdrop of textured plaster and wood, highlighting its form and material.
We used folded geometric forms in the walls to create distinct zones and backdrops for furniture displays. This approach allows for the creation of intimate vignettes within the large, open-plan showroom.
The geometrical folds in the wall are translated into creating unique setups for the display of furniture, adding depth and architectural interest to the retail space.
A subtle, earthy-colored door demonstrates fine craftsmanship with its stitched detail. This element adds a sense of depth, dimension, and bespoke quality to the overall design of the space.
The perfect balance of natural and artificial light gives the showroom an inviting and warm feeling. We designed the upper floor with large windows and a neutral palette to create an airy, gallery-like atmosphere for the bedroom displays.
About Magari: Retail as an Experience
In this showroom, we moved away from conventional display racks to create vignettes, using architectural folds in the walls that house furniture like art. By using ferrocement for the sculptural staircase and keeping the lighting soft, we ensured the focus stays entirely on the material quality of the furniture rather than the commercial nature of the space.
Designing retail environments is often about visibility and volume, but for Magari, we chose to design for intimacy. Our philosophy is that a shopper should not feel like they are in a store, but rather exploring a series of curated rooms in a home.
The Architecture of Display
We used folded geometric forms in the walls to partition the vast showroom into distinct, quiet zones. These folds are not just decorative; they serve as backdrops that frame furniture pieces, giving each chair or console a sense of place. The central feature—a sweeping, monolithic staircase made of ferrocement—guides visitors through the different levels, turning circulation into a tactile, sensory experience.
Material Honesty
We prioritized raw, honest materials to ground the space. Raw concrete, dark stone flooring, and neutral plaster finishes form the canvas. This restraint allows the intricate woodwork and rattan weaving of the furniture to take the lead. By balancing natural light from large windows with soft, ambient artificial lighting, we crafted an airy, gallery-like atmosphere that feels inviting rather than transactional.
Our Approach
Whether it is a retail environment or a private residence, our process remains consistent: we treat the space as a quiet poem that guides the occupant. For your project, this means we look at how walls, light, and movement come together to tell your brand’s unique story.
