Backbends are more than just physical shapes. They are a way to charge your body with energy, improve spinal mobility, and release emotional tension through safe, mindful technique.

A student flows through a dynamic backbend in a group class, with me observing to ensure safe alignment. Backbends are uplifting and help to open the heart center.

Providing deep support in a drop-back. This level of assistance allows the student to experience the full range of the posture while feeling completely secure.

True balance in yoga is about finding both strength and flexibility. Here, I assist a student in Urdhva Dhanurasana (Wheel Pose), helping her use her leg strength to support the backbend.

My own exploration of backbends, from using a yoga wheel for support to rising into a standing backbend. This practice is about releasing control and trusting the body's intelligence.

Assisting a student in a standing backbend during a class at a partner studio. The focus is on creating length in the spine before arching back.

A sequence from my personal practice, moving from Ustrasana (Camel Pose) into a deeper variation. Backbends are a daily must for me to maintain energy and spinal mobility.

A backbend intensive class where we use props like straps to understand shoulder opening. This technique helps students access deeper backbends like Urdhva Dhanurasana.

Students using yoga wheels to open the thoracic spine. This is a safe and effective way to prepare the body for deeper backbends and release tension in the upper back.

A moment from my personal practice, moving from a forward fold into Urdhva Dhanurasana. This dynamic transition builds heat and connects movement with breath.

Receiving a powerful adjustment in a drop-back from my teacher in Bali. This experience deepened my own understanding of the energetics of backbending.

About Spinal Health: The Power of Backbends

I often see students treat backbends as just a test of flexibility. My approach is different. We start by using props like yoga wheels and blocks to safely create space in the thoracic spine before we ever attempt a deep arch. It is not about forcing your body into a shape, it is about building the strength and stability required to open the heart safely.
