Props aren't for making yoga easy—they are for finding the correct alignment your body needs. Whether you're stiff or advanced, my studio in Rohini uses ropes, blocks, and chairs to help you practice safely and effectively.

Here, I demonstrate how a simple chair can be used as a tool to safely practice Poorna Shalabhasana, the Full Locust Pose. This support allows for a deeper, more controlled backbend, strengthening the spine without risk of injury.

The wall ropes in our studio are fantastic for exploring postures in a new way. From supported inversions to deep stretches, these ropes help decompress the spine and build upper body strength with the aid of gravity.

The Crane Pose or Bakasana can be intimidating for beginners. I teach students how to use yoga bricks to build confidence and find their balance, breaking down the pose into manageable steps for a successful lift-off.

The wall is one of the best props for learning advanced poses like the standing Chakrasana drop-back. We first practice with the wall to build strength and confidence before attempting the pose without support.

We incorporate light dumbbells into our practice to build functional strength. This helps tone the arms, shoulders, and triceps, which is essential for supporting the body in more challenging asanas like Wheel Pose.

A simple stick or danda can be a powerful tool for improving posture and alignment. I guide students through various exercises using the stick to open the shoulders and maintain a straight spine.

A yoga belt is an excellent prop for deepening stretches safely. Here, our students use belts in Trikonasana to extend their reach and open their side body without compromising their alignment.

Chair yoga is for everyone, not just beginners. We use chairs to explore advanced variations of poses like Vasisthasana, allowing students to experience the full expression of the asana with stability and support.

Backbends can be made more accessible and restorative with the help of a chair. This setup allows students to open their chest and spine deeply while feeling completely supported.

This is another example of how we use chairs in our classes, this time for a supported Shalabhasana (Locust Pose). This variation builds back strength effectively and is great for all levels.

About Smart Yoga with Props

Props like wall ropes and blocks are not shortcuts; they are tools for precise alignment. When you use a chair for a backbend or ropes for spinal traction, you aren't making the pose easier—you are making it safer for your unique body. This approach allows you to feel the stretch where it actually matters, removing the fear of 'jor' (strain) or 'chot' (injury).
