Wrestling for MMA: Takedowns, Control & Scrambles
Forget point-scoring tournaments. I teach wrestling designed for the cage: takedowns that link with strikes, wall control, and scrambles to dominate your opponent.
Here’s one of my favorite drills for teaching relentless forward pressure and control. Using balloons in our wrestling class makes it a fun challenge, but the goal is serious. It teaches you to stay on your opponent and dominate the position, a key skill for MMA.
We offer specialized training for all levels. Here are some clips from an advanced wrestling class with Coach Shaun, working on complex takedowns and scramble situations. We focus on the small details that make a big difference in a real fight.
A great session with the team working on how to draw reactions from an opponent. In MMA, being able to create openings is a critical skill. We break down the strategy behind the techniques so you learn to fight smarter, not just harder.
The crew after a solid Wednesday Wrestling and MMA session. I live the grind, and I know what it takes to improve your ground game. If you want to learn how to control where the fight takes place, this is the class for you.
The aftermath of a packed Wrestling Wednesday class. This is one of our most popular sessions, where we focus purely on the grappling aspect of MMA. You can see the hard work and camaraderie that defines our gym.
About Wrestling for MMA: Takedowns, Control & Scrambles
I don’t teach wrestling for points; I teach it for the cage. When you step into my class, expect 90 minutes of high-intensity drills where we connect takedowns with striking setups and wall wrestling. We train on high-density mats, focusing on the specific mechanics that keep you safe and in control when things get chaotic.
The Reality of Cage Wrestling
Most wrestling gyms focus on Olympic or tournament styles where the goal is a pin or a technical point. That doesn't translate to MMA. In the cage, the fence is your third partner. You use it to stand up, you use it to pin an opponent, and you use it to set up nasty takedowns. My classes focus on that cage-specific physics. We drill how to shoot on an opponent who is actively striking, how to scramble when you are compromised, and how to maintain ground control so you burn less energy than your opponent.
What to Expect
Every session is built around the grind. We start with specialized neck conditioning and tumbling to ensure you can take an impact and keep moving. From there, we go live. You will learn:
- Chain Wrestling: Linking double legs, single legs, and body locks seamlessly.
- Reaction Drills: Using props to simulate sudden changes in direction, ensuring you can scramble out of bad positions.
- Shark Tank Sparring: Rotation rounds where you face fresh opponents, testing your endurance and technique under pressure.
Why Train With Us
I compete at Matrix Fight Night, so I’m not just teaching theory. Every movement I show is something I use in my own fights. You are learning from active professionals who understand the difference between gym-perfect technique and what actually works in a chaotic, adrenaline-filled fight. Whether you are a total beginner who has never shot a takedown, or an advanced student looking to sharpen your cage IQ, the mats are open. Come through.
