The Road to Janbo: Our Story of Clay and Travel
The Janbo was never a business plan. It was born from a long pause, a need for quiet, and the discovery that clay is a language of its own.
Chapter 1: The Day Everything went silent. This is where The Janbo really began. In February 2020, I hit pause on life. It was in that silence that I found the space for clay to walk in.
In the quiet emptiness, I stumbled upon slow-living vlogs on YouTube. I saw calm music, hands in clay, and a simpler world. That’s when something inside me quietly shifted.
The road calls, and we always answer. This is the introduction to our 8,000 km journey from Bengaluru to Ladakh, a trip to meet artists and gather stories, celebrating the spirit of travel that started Janbo.
Day one of our road trip to Ladakh. We started from Bengaluru with family sending us off, stopping at the Khanapur Pottery Institute to connect with the deep roots of our craft.
Where the journey meets creativity. From the mountains to the sea, I find inspiration in every corner of the globe, creating pottery along the way. This is an invitation to join the journey.
Travel therapy is a real thing. For me, it's a journey of healing, a necessary escape to recharge the human spirit. It offers a safe space to reconnect with yourself.
About Our Story: The Road to Janbo
When I quit my job in 2020, I had no plan, no studio, and certainly no pottery skills. It was just months of silence and a desperate need to find something that felt real again. That quiet reset is exactly what I try to build into every workshop today. It isn't about perfecting a pot or learning a technique quickly; it is about giving yourself the space to step away from the noise, just like I did, and letting your hands do the thinking for a while.
The Janbo did not start in a studio. It started on a yoga mat in a quiet room, with a dog named Pinto, and a realization that I had spent years running without knowing where I was going. When I finally stopped, the silence was heavy, but it was also the first time I could hear myself. I stumbled into pottery almost by accident, but once my hands touched the clay, the shift was immediate. It was grounding, messy, and deeply honest.
More Than Just Pottery
People often ask why we travel so much. The answer is simple: The Janbo is built on the spirit of the road. We have taken clay from Bengaluru to Ladakh, driven thousands of kilometers, and met artists whose stories deserve to be told. Travel is where we find inspiration, but it is also how we bring a sense of community to our workshops. Whether we are in an Adyar cafe in Chennai or a studio space in Mumbai, the goal remains the same: to create a space where you can breathe.
What You Will Find Here
My workshops are not rigid classes. If you are looking for a sterile environment, this isn't it. We value the process over the product. You might leave with a slightly wobbly bowl, but you will also leave with a calmer mind and a story of your own. We handle all the technical side—the firing, the glazing, the shipping—so that during the three hours we spend together, you are free to just create. No experience is required, just a curious heart and a willingness to get a little dirty.
The Janbo
I am Madhumita. I left a fast-paced life to find quiet in clay, and now I help others do the same through workshops that are part art, part therapy. My studio is my heart, and every session is an invite to pause and reconnect with yourself.
