Live Tabla Performances and Collaborative Jam Sessions
Music is best when shared. Whether it is accompanying a classical vocalist, playing at a Gurudwara, or a spontaneous studio jam, here are some glimpses into my live performance journey.
A short tabla solo snippet in a 14 beat cycle from a recent live show. Performing on stage is a chance to share the energy and joy of music directly with an audience.
A jam session with a friend, exploring some variations on a basic TeenTaal theme. The smiles show how much fun it is to create music together.
Accompanying a talented vocalist singing Raag Brindavani Sarang. In classical music, the tabla player and vocalist have a dynamic conversation, responding to each other's musical ideas.
Another clip from a practice session with a fellow tabla player. Playing together helps improve our timing, listening skills, and ability to synchronize.
Here we are playing a self composed 'Chakkardaar Paran'. Creating and practicing complex compositions with a partner is a challenging and rewarding process.
Exploring some rhythmic ideas in the 16 beat cycle, TeenTaal, with a friend. These informal sessions are where many new ideas are born.
A close up shot of our hands during a dual tabla practice session. You can see four hands working in unison to create a single, cohesive rhythm.
About this collection
Live performance is a constant conversation. When I jam with another artist, whether it is a classical vocalist or a fusion guitarist, the real magic happens in the moments we respond to each other. It forces you to listen, adjust your tempo, and find that perfect sum together, which is something you just cannot replicate in solo practice.
Beyond the Studio
While I spend hours doing riyaaz (practice) alone, performing live is where the rhythm truly comes alive. My work as a tabla player spans across different settings, each requiring a unique approach to the instrument.
My Performance Range
- Gurbani Kirtan: Performing at Gurudwaras like RakabGanj Sahib is my spiritual practice. Here, the tabla provides the rhythmic soul for the Shabad, demanding precision and respect for the tradition.
- Classical Accompaniment: I enjoy the dynamic back-and-forth with vocalists. Whether it is keeping the rhythm for a Raag or executing a complex Tihai, the goal is to enhance the melody, not overpower it.
- Fusion & Studio Jams: This is where I experiment. From Bollywood covers to Punjabi pop, I look for ways to adapt traditional bols into modern, upbeat tracks. It is about keeping the essence of the tabla while fitting into a new soundscape.
Why Collaborate?
Playing with others is the best way to improve your musical instincts. It teaches you how to lock in with a metronome or another musician, how to handle stage pressure, and how to create variations on the spot. If you are looking for a tabla player for your event or studio session in Delhi NCR, I bring the experience of 13 years of practice and a deep love for the craft. We can discuss your requirements, whether you need a traditional accompaniment or something new for a fusion project.
Jasmehar Singh
I'm Jasmehar. Tabla is my junoon (passion) and my life. Whether it is performing at a Gurudwara like RakabGanj Sahib or a studio jam with friends, playing music is where I feel most at home.
