Welcome to my world of rhythm. I’m Jasmehar, and in this collection, I share the foundation of my practice, from traditional classical technique to fun, modern fusion covers. Let’s start your journey.

Building a strong foundation is the most important step in learning tabla. In this clip, I demonstrate some fundamental techniques for producing a clear and resonant base sound, focusing on proper hand posture and striking. Mastering these basics is the key to all future progress.

Playing for Gurbani Kirtan is a deeply spiritual experience for me. This is a short clip of me playing along with a shabad in TeenTaal, a common 16 beat cycle. The goal is to support the vocals and create a meditative atmosphere.

Tabla can fit beautifully with modern music too. Here is my take on the popular Bollywood song "Jab Saiyaan". This kind of fusion playing helps students understand rhythm in a context they already know and love.

I am nothing without the blessings of my teacher, my Ustad Ji. This collage is from Guru Poornima, a day to honor the gurus who guide us. His guidance over thirteen years has shaped me as a musician and a person.

Understanding the concept of 'Sum' is fundamental to Indian classical music. In this clip from a workshop, I explain and demonstrate how all rhythmic variations in a 'Taal' or cycle resolve back to this first beat, creating a sense of completion.

Music is often a joyful conversation between musicians. Here is a fun session with a fellow artist on the energetic Marathi lavani "Wajle Ki Bara". Learning to play with others is a key part of my teaching approach.

By Waheguru's grace, I was honored to secure the 2nd position in the Octave Solo Instrumental Competition at Maulana Azad Medical College. It is always a privilege to share my music and have it be appreciated.

About this collection

I don't just teach you the notes. In my classes, we focus heavily on 'padhant' (vocal recitation) and correct hand posture on the Dayan and Bayan so you build muscle memory that actually lasts. Whether you're a complete beginner wanting to learn TeenTaal or an intermediate player looking to refine your classical theory, my goal is to help you feel the rhythm, not just play it.

My Approach to Rhythm

Thirteen years of riyaaz (practice) have taught me that tabla isn't a race—it's a journey. My method, passed down through my Ustad Ji, starts with building a rock-solid foundation. We won't jump to complex compositions until your base is clear.

What You Will Learn

  • The Basics: I break down the fundamental bols like Na, Tin, Ge, and Ke, ensuring your hand placement minimizes strain and maximizes sound clarity.
  • Classical Theory: You will learn how to navigate the cycle, understanding sum (the resolution beat), tihai, and kayda.
  • Practical Application: I show you how to apply these techniques to actual music—whether that’s supporting Gurbani Kirtan at the Gurudwara or playing fusion beats for Bollywood and Punjabi pop covers.

Flexible Learning Options

Whether you are based in Delhi or anywhere else, I have a format that works:

  • Online Lessons: 1-on-1 sessions via Zoom or Google Meet. You get PDF charts for your kaydas and video clips for revision.
  • Home Tuition (Delhi NCR): If you prefer in-person, I offer home visits where I can personally adjust your posture, tune your instrument to the correct sur, and jam with you live.

Learning tabla is about finding your own style. If you are ready to put in the time and practice, let's make some music together.
