Tabla Solo Performances & Classical Concerts
Music truly comes alive when it is shared. Here are moments from my solo recitals and collaborations, where hours of ryaaz transform into a rhythmic dialogue with the audience.
A candid moment during a sound check for the Jahan-e-Khusrau festival in Delhi. The preparation before a concert is just as important as the performance itself.
A view from the audience during my recent tabla solo at Ghatkopar Sangeet Vidyala in Mumbai. It's a joy to see people of all ages connecting with classical music.
On stage in Mumbai, accompanied by a wonderful harmonium player. The interplay between the tabla and the lehra (melodic timekeeping) is a beautiful dialogue.
A group photo with fellow artists and organizers after the concert in Mumbai. Music is about community and shared experiences.
Performing at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. The vibrant backdrop reflects the colorful energy of the music.
A close-up of my hands during the performance in Delhi. On stage, the years of practice translate into effortless expression.
A moment of reflection after a wonderful show in Kolkata. Each performance is a learning experience and leaves me feeling blessed and inspired.
Another portrait from my time in Kolkata. The life of a traveling musician is demanding but incredibly rewarding.
Performing as part of the Baithak Series. The intimate setting of a baithak allows for a deep connection with the audience.
The joy of playing is evident. When the rhythm flows, a smile comes naturally. This is what I hope my students experience.
About On Stage: Concerts & Live Performances
Before every performance, I work closely with sound engineers to ensure the tonal clarity of my Punjab Gharana style is captured perfectly, whether it is for a large festival stage or an intimate baithak. This level of preparation is essential for an authentic sound, as it allows me to focus entirely on the rhythmic dialogue with the audience and the artist I am accompanying.
Performing is where the discipline of my daily practice meets the energy of the audience. My style is firmly rooted in the Punjab Gharana, characterized by its powerful resonance, clear syllable (Bol) articulation, and the use of complex cycles like Teentaal or Roopak.
I treat every stage as a space for honest expression. My performance repertoire is versatile—ranging from traditional solo recitals that showcase the depth of the tabla to providing rhythmic accompaniment for vocalists and instrumentalists. I believe that whether I am playing at a large venue like the India Habitat Centre or in a private baithak, the goal remains the same: to create a connection through sound.
I am also experienced in performing for spiritual and devotional settings, such as Gurbani Kirtan, where the tabla needs to support the meditative nature of the music rather than overpower it. My approach is not about technical showmanship, but about the sincerity of the rhythm and the purity of the notes. If you are planning an event that requires a dedicated classical musician who understands the nuances of the Punjab Gharana, I would be happy to discuss how my tabla performance can complement your program.
Surjeet Singh
Music is not just my profession, it is a spiritual journey rooted in the teachings of my Guru, Ustad Joginder Singh Ji. Whether I am playing a solo recital or accompanying a vocalist, my goal is to let the tabla speak with sincerity and rhythm.
