Our Musical Philosophy: Hindustani Classical as Sadhana
We view music not as a performance, but as a spiritual journey. Here, the notes are merely the medium; emotion is the destination.
The great Pt. Kumar Gandharva reminds us that music is not just craft, but also art. We encourage our students to not just practice, but to think and feel their music.
The words of the legendary Pt. Jasraj, for whom music and divinity were inseparable. This philosophy is the foundation of our academy.
As Mozart said, the music is in the silence between the notes. This profound truth applies to all great art forms, including our own Hindustani classical music.
About Our Musical Philosophy
At our Rohini studio, we intentionally move away from stage performances. We seat you on the floor, at the same level as the artists, because we believe music is a conversation. Without the distance of a stage or the barrier of a microphone, you start to hear the pauses—the silence between the notes—where the true emotion, or 'Bhaav', of the Raga resides.
For us at Swarveni, the Guru-Shishya parampara is not just a historical concept; it is the living foundation of how we teach and share music. We follow the wisdom of masters like Pt. Kumar Gandharva and Pt. Jasraj, who reminded us that constant practice means nothing if the heart is not involved.
Our philosophy dictates that every session, whether a private baithak or a classroom lesson, must be approached with the intent of learning. We focus on these core pillars:
- Bhaav over Technique: While technical precision is necessary, we teach students that a perfectly executed note is empty if it lacks feeling.
- The Baithak Experience: We bring music into an intimate space. By removing the amplifier and the elevated stage, we create an environment where the artist and the listener are on equal ground, allowing for a deeper exchange of the Raga's essence.
- Holistic Growth: We treat music as a life-long discipline. Our students are not just pupils; they are members of a community dedicated to preserving the sanctity of Hindustani classical music in Delhi.
Whether you are joining us for a formal class or a thematic baithak, our goal remains the same: to help you move beyond merely hearing the music to truly listening to it. We invite you to experience this tradition firsthand, away from the noise of the city, at our academy in North Ex Mall, Rohini.
