Thoughtful Private Residence Design

We design homes that act as private sanctuaries, balancing personal space with the natural flow of light and air. Every residence we create is a direct response to its site, designed to harmonize with the local streetscape and environment.

'Bounding Box' is a design iteration for a single-family residence atop a retail space. This mixed-use strategy monetizes the site's commercial potential while elevating the living spaces for better views, light, and ventilation.

An internal view of the 'Bounding Box' residence, showcasing the layered design with multiple terraces, gardens, and a pool. The house is a complex volume of interconnected indoor and outdoor spaces.

The 'Solid | Void | Solid House', completed in 2021. From the street, the house appears as a composition of opaque and transparent volumes, hinting at the private court at the back.

The public spaces of this home are located in the interstices between the private bedroom blocks. This design connects the building to its gardens and terraces on multiple levels.

From our archives, the 'Boxed In House' completed in 2013. The design transcends its narrow 7.6m plot by creating an internal courtyard around which all spaces unfold.

The design for 'Bounding Box' creates a private oasis in a peripheral city location, with green spaces and a pool integrated into the home's structure.

The project explores the concept of a house within a larger bounding frame, creating a variety of semi-enclosed outdoor spaces.

About this collection

We often utilize mixed-use programming to maximize your site's potential. For instance, incorporating a ground-floor retail or studio space helps cross-subsidize construction costs while elevating your living quarters for better ventilation and privacy. This approach allows us to transform a constrained urban plot into an open, airy sanctuary that feels disconnected from the city's noise.

Our residential projects begin with a deep exploration of the site. We treat the home not as an isolated object, but as an intervention in the urban fabric. Whether navigating a narrow 7.6-meter plot, as we did for our 'Boxed In House', or designing a mixed-use residential structure, our focus is on managing volume and light.

The Thinking Hand Process

We do not rely on templates. Our design process is hands-on and rigorous. We use physical scale models to study light penetration, wind paths, and the way you will move through your home. This allows us to test complex geometries, such as the 'Solid | Void | Solid' interaction we utilized in our 2021 residential project, where public living spaces serve as a connection point between private bedroom blocks.

Designing for Context

We believe a home should offer both opacity and transparency. From the street, we create facades that respect the neighborhood's privacy, while the interiors open up into internal courtyards or terraces. This strategy ensures your home remains a secluded environment even in the heart of a dense city. We pay close attention to:

  • Climatic Response: Using wind path and sun path analysis to ensure your interiors remain cool and well-lit.
  • Materiality: Using raw, honest materials like concrete, wood, and stone that age gracefully.
  • Spatial Flow: Designing corridors and staircases that double as social hubs or transition zones rather than just circulatory paths.

By carefully mapping the socio-cultural patterns of your specific location, we ensure that your new home feels like it has always belonged there.
