About Student Journeys & Community
Living here is a departure from city life, defined by a daily regimen that starts at 5:30 AM. You will not find luxury accommodations; instead, you will experience the discipline of a traditional ashram, where Karma Yoga—community service like kitchen help or cleaning—is an integral part of the daily schedule. This environment is designed to strip away distractions, allowing you to focus entirely on your personal growth, asana practice, and self-study.
The journey you undertake at our ashram in Amboli goes beyond learning how to teach. It is about becoming part of a Sangha, or community, of sincere seekers. Whether you are joining us for the 200-hour Level 1 course or the more intensive 300-hour Level 2 teacher training, you will find that the transformation happens not just in the practice hall, but in the small, consistent acts of daily life.
The Reality of Ashram Life
When you arrive, you step into a structure that has been refined over decades. We follow a strict schedule of meditation, Hatha yoga, and Vedanta philosophy. This routine is not intended to be easy; it is intended to create clarity. You will eat Sattvic vegetarian meals, observe periods of silence, and engage in daily rituals like Satsang and chanting. This lifestyle is the backbone of our teachings, helping you to quiet the mind and prepare for deeper understanding.
A Shared Path
Our students come from all over the world, bringing different backgrounds but sharing a single desire for knowledge. We have seen engineers, doctors, and students of all ages find common ground through the practice of Yoga. In our community, there is no hierarchy of ego. Everyone, from the complete beginner to the advanced practitioner, engages in the same Karma Yoga and follows the same discipline.
This is the strength of the Sivananda lineage. We do not just teach postures; we offer a framework for living. You will leave with more than a certificate—you will leave with a stronger connection to your true Self, a deeper understanding of the Yoga Sutras, and a perspective that you can carry back to your daily life, regardless of where you live.
