Spiritual Sadhana: Pujas and Meditation at Amboli Ashram
Beyond the physical postures, we invite you to immerse yourself in the heart of our tradition. Join us in the ashram for sacred fire ceremonies, daily meditation, and the devotional practice of Bhakti Yoga.
Performing a Havan, a sacred fire ceremony. The offerings made to the fire are symbolic of offering our own impurities to be transformed by divine grace.
The smoke from the sacred fire purifies the atmosphere and the participants. These ancient rituals are a powerful part of our Vedanta and yoga programs.
A swami carefully tends to the sacred fire during a ceremony. Each action in a puja is performed with mindfulness and devotion.
Lighting the sacred fire is the beginning of a powerful ritual to invoke divine blessings and purify the mind.
Performing Arati, the waving of light, during a Satsang. This act of devotion helps to focus the mind and cultivate a feeling of love and surrender.
Students prepare a beautiful rangoli for a Devi Puja. This act of Karma Yoga, or selfless service, is itself a form of meditation and offering.
The intricate process of creating a sacred mandala with colored powders is a practice in concentration and devotion.
A student carefully adds details to the rangoli. Every part of the preparation for a puja is done with a meditative and reverent attitude.
The vibrant colors of the Sri Yantra come to life. This sacred geometry is a visual tool for meditation and concentration.

About Spiritual Sadhana: Pujas and Meditation
Our Pujas and meditation sessions are an integral part of the daily ashram rhythm, beginning with early morning Satsang and culminating in sacred fire ceremonies. Whether you are participating in a Havan or sitting for evening Arati, the focus is on personal discipline and quieting the mind. It is a space for you to observe and engage, with guidance provided on the significance of every gesture.
At Sivananda Yoga Vidya Peetham, spiritual Sadhana is the bedrock of our ashram life. While many come to us for Asana practice, the true depth of our lineage is found in the stillness of meditation and the devotion of Bhakti Yoga.
The Role of Rituals
Our Pujas are rooted in the Vedic tradition. A Havan, or sacred fire ceremony, is more than a ritual; it is a symbolic offering of our impurities into the fire, a practice of surrender. You will see students and Swamis alike engaging in the intricate preparation of rangolis, where the act of creating sacred geometry becomes a form of moving meditation.
Daily Immersion
Living in our Amboli ashram, your days are structured by these rhythms. We follow a schedule that includes:
- Morning and Evening Satsang: A time for collective meditation, chanting, and silent reflection to anchor your day.
- Arati: The waving of light, which helps focus the wandering mind and cultivate a sense of gratitude.
- Karma Yoga: Even the preparation for a Devi Puja—cleaning, kitchen service, or library duty—is treated as an offering, teaching us to find the divine in simple, daily service.
These ceremonies are accessible to everyone, regardless of your background. We encourage you to observe with an open mind. Whether you are chanting the Vedic mantras or simply sitting quietly in the meditation hall, the goal remains the same: to move inward, connect with your true Self, and find the clarity that comes from a life of discipline and devotion.
