Urban Oasis: A Climate-Responsive Home in Hapur
A multi-generational home in Hapur, where a robust, grid-patterned facade shields against the elements while nurturing a serene, light-filled interior sanctuary.
A collage showing the Urban Oasis in its context, with its strong, grid-like facade creating a distinct presence. The design was conceived as an inward-looking sanctuary, balancing industrial resilience with the warmth of a family home, a story we were proud to see featured in Habitus Living.
The building's form is designed like a coconut: a hard shell to protect against pollution and wildlife, with a soft, welcoming interior. The grid motif allows sunlight and air to permeate the structure, creating a breathable and balanced living environment.
The entrance sequence softens the building's rugged exterior. Earthy terracotta pots and lush greenery guide the approach, while towering columns and a wooden soffit frame the main door, creating a transition from the industrial cityscape to a serene residential space.
From sketch to site, the facade of Urban Oasis combines a rugged aesthetic with structural precision. This top-down view shows the deep, geometric grid that forms the building's primary visual and structural identity, creating a cohesive narrative within its industrial landscape.
This video captures the dual nature of the Urban Oasis. The exterior is a protective shield, while the interior spaces are open and flow seamlessly. The design uses a porous architectural language to integrate nature and light deep into the home.
The formal living area contrasts the rugged exterior with refined elegance. A monochromatic palette, Indian marble, and brick flooring create a tranquil mood, while large windows connect the space to the outdoors, proving that a protective facade can still create bright, airy interiors.
In the dining area, earthy brick flooring meets cool Indian stone, continuing the narrative of rugged and refined. The space is designed for shared family meals, with abundant natural light and a clean material palette creating a calm, inviting atmosphere.
We believe in using everyday materials in innovative ways. Here, cost-effective bricks are used for flooring, with the laying pattern mirroring the facade's grid. This creates a cohesive design language and adds natural warmth to the interiors.
For the boundary wall, we used designer 8-hole bricks arranged in a distinctive pattern. These bricks are not only visually interesting but also functional, as their weather-resistant and self-cleansing properties are ideal for the Indian climate.
The facade uses fly ash bricks for their rugged, raw look, which strengthens over time without needing a finish. This industrial aesthetic perfectly complements the bastion-like design of the Urban Oasis, as seen in this detailed view of the upper levels.
About Project Spotlight: Urban Oasis, Hapur
This project demonstrates how a defensive architectural element can become a defining design feature. We utilized fly ash bricks and reinforced concrete to create a grid-like facade that specifically addresses local constraints like pollution and wildlife interference, effectively turning a necessary protective shield into a visual anchor for the building.
The Urban Oasis in Hapur was conceived as a response to its dense, industrial surroundings. Our primary challenge was creating a residential space that felt secure without sacrificing the connection to light and air. We approached this by designing the house like a fruit with a protective skin: a hard, external shell that keeps the chaos of the city at bay, while the interior remains a soft, open sanctuary.
The facade is built on a structural grid of reinforced concrete and fly ash bricks. This geometric pattern is not merely aesthetic; it serves as a filter. By carefully modeling the angles, we control how sunlight enters the home, allowing for soft, ambient illumination while blocking direct, harsh heat. This climate-responsive design significantly reduces the need for artificial cooling.
We extended this logic to the boundary wall, utilizing 8-hole bricks in a specific pattern. These bricks provide privacy and durability while allowing the structure to breathe. At night, the building transforms. Concealed lighting integrated into the facade layers creates a warm glow, completely shifting the building’s presence from a rugged industrial fortress during the day to a welcoming, gentle family home after sunset.
This project highlights our approach to modern residential architecture in India: finding the intersection between practical problem-solving and poetic form. It proves that a home can be a bastion of safety and a place of quiet reflection, even within a bustling urban landscape.
