Classical dance requires intense physical stamina and focus. My training isn't just about the steps; it is about building the core strength and endurance needed to perform with grace. Here is how I supplement my dance practice to stay strong.

My Workout Wednesday ritual. This reel shows a glimpse of my 6 AM functional training session, which includes everything from kettlebell swings to pull-ups to keep me fit and focused.

Sometimes, dancing alone is not enough. A morning workout in the park helps me achieve my fitness goals, building the strength and endurance needed for a demanding classical dance practice.

About Fitness for Dancers

In my adult wellness batches, we dedicate the first 20 minutes of every class specifically to conditioning. We focus on yoga-inspired stretches, core engagement, and cardio to build the stamina required for maintaining Araimandi (the half-sit posture). This pre-dance preparation helps adult students release tension, gain flexibility, and build the physical resilience needed for classical choreography.

Why Dancers Need Cross-Training

Many students assume that dancing is the only exercise you need. However, to execute complex Adavus (footwork) and sustain emotional Abhinaya (expression) for extended periods, your body requires more. I incorporate functional training—like the kettlebell work and pull-ups you see in my gallery—to support my dance practice. This creates a foundation of strength that prevents injury and keeps the body agile.

My Approach for Adult Learners

When I teach adults at my Gurgaon and Vasant Kunj studios, I adapt these fitness principles for the busy professional. We do not just run through steps; we build the body to support the art.

  • Conditioning: We focus on areas most impacted by dance, such as hip mobility, lower back strength, and ankle stability.
  • Stamina Building: We progressively increase the duration of rhythmic sequences to improve cardiovascular endurance.
  • Injury Prevention: We emphasize alignment and proper form, ensuring that years of training do not lead to long-term strain.

Whether you are a beginner looking to improve your fitness through dance or an experienced practitioner wanting to refine your technique, these sessions are designed to make you feel capable and strong.

I am Shreyasi, and I believe that dance is a full-body commitment. When I am not in the studio teaching, you will often find me focusing on functional fitness to keep my body performance-ready. Dancing is my passion, but keeping my body strong is the discipline that allows me to share that art joyfully.
