About this collection
When we carve these mythical figures, we let the natural grain of the seasoned Vagai wood dictate the final curve of a Hamsa or the ornamentation on a Nandi. Because every piece is hand-chiseled from a single block, you will notice subtle variations in the relief depth that machines simply cannot replicate, ensuring your sculpture is truly one of a kind.
The Hamsa, or Annapakshi, is a recurring motif in our Thammampatty tradition, symbolizing purity and spiritual wisdom. When we carve these birds, we adhere to the specific iconometry passed down through generations, ensuring the curvature of the tail feathers and the depth of the beak reflect authentic South Indian temple art. Whether you choose a 12-inch tabletop sculpture or a pair of wall brackets, each piece is crafted from seasoned Vagai or Rain Tree wood native to the Salem region.
Similarly, our Nandi sculptures are carved to capture the patient, watchful gaze of the sacred bull. We avoid mass-production methods, preferring to use traditional hand chisels that allow for fine detailing on the ornamentation and the musculature of the figure. You might notice slight variations in the wood grain or finish; this is intentional and serves as a mark of genuine hand-crafted quality.
For those seeking to incorporate these figures into modern interiors, we recommend pairing our 19-inch Hamsa sculptures on either side of a console table for symmetry, or using our parrot wall mounts to frame a wooden door. Every item arrives with its GI-certified tag, confirming it was made in our workshop in Thammampatty. We ensure every sculpture, from small table accents to larger figures, is treated to resist termites and finished with either a natural wax brown or an antique polish to suit your home decor.
