Yoga is accessible to everyone, at any age. This video demonstrates Chair Surya Namaskar, a modified sun salutation that allows seniors or those with limited mobility to boost energy, stretch the body, and stay active from a seated position.

This video showcases a safe, advanced backbend for senior citizens using a chair for support. It's a testament to our belief that with proper guidance and props, age is no barrier to exploring the full depth of yoga practice.

Many people worry that yoga requires flexibility they lost years ago, but our sessions are designed differently. We rely heavily on props—sturdy chairs, wall ropes, and bolsters—that act as support systems rather than shortcuts. This setup allows you to enjoy the benefits of deeper stretching and spinal traction without putting strain on vulnerable joints, helping you build independence and physical confidence rather than just working toward a perfect pose.

In our Jayanagar studio, our primary focus for senior students is functional mobility—the kind of movement that helps you stay independent in your daily life. Whether you are managing post-surgery recovery, dealing with stiffness, or simply looking to improve your balance and clarity, we tailor the practice to your body's current needs.

Our Prop-Based Approach

We use specific equipment that changes how you experience yoga:

  • Chair Yoga: Perfect for those who find floor work challenging or lack confidence in balance. We perform Sun Salutations and stretches seated or using the chair for stability.
  • Wall Ropes: Essential for spinal traction, helping to decompress the vertebrae and alleviate chronic back pain.
  • Supportive Blocks & Bolsters: These allow for restorative holds that safely open the chest and hips without straining ligaments.

Breaking the Myths

There is a misconception that seniors should avoid dynamic or advanced movements. We have students in their 70s safely practicing modifications of inversions like Shirshasana (Headstand) because we prepare the body with proper alignment first. It is not about looking like the person on social media; it is about feeling steady on your feet and clear in your mind.

We keep batch sizes small to ensure every movement is monitored. If you have medical concerns—be it arthritis, sciatica, or post-cardiac recovery—please mention them during our intake chat so we can adapt the flow for your safety.
