Pranayama Techniques and Breathing Exercises
Discover how simple breathwork can calm your nervous system. I will guide you through foundational techniques like Anulom Vilom to help you increase energy and find balance at your own pace.
Let's learn Anulom Vilom, or alternate nostril breathing. I explain the Vishnu Mudra hand position and guide you through the basic technique, as well as how to add counts and retention for a deeper practice.
This is a tutorial on Kapalbhati, a powerful cleansing breath. I explain the technique of forceful exhalation and passive inhalation, reminding you to keep your face and shoulders relaxed.
Here I break down Anulom Vilom into four progressive phases. You can start with simple alternate nostril breathing and gradually work your way up to a 1:4:2 ratio of inhale, retention, and exhale.
About this collection
When practicing Kapalbhati or Anulom Vilom, the most common mistake is forcing the breath or tensing your jaw and shoulders. If you feel dizzy or strained, you have gone too far. My approach focuses on gradual progression; we start with comfortable, natural breathing before introducing any retention, ensuring your practice remains a tool for calming your nervous system rather than another source of stress.
Breath as an Anchor
Pranayama is not just about moving air in and out; it is about raising your energy and connecting with your internal rhythm. In our fast-paced lives, we often breathe shallowly without realizing it. By consciously practicing techniques like Anulom Vilom and Kapalbhati, you can begin to rewire that stress response.
Foundations of Pranayama
- Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing): This is excellent for balancing the left and right hemispheres of the brain. I teach this in four phases, starting with simple alternating breaths and moving towards the 1:4:2 ratio—inhaling for four counts, retaining for sixteen, and exhaling for eight. Remember, the retention ratio should only be what is comfortable for you. Do not rush to the 16-count hold; your body will tell you when it is ready.
- Kapalbhati (Skull Shining Breath): This is a powerful cleansing technique. The key is in the passive inhalation and the active, forceful exhalation using your abdominal muscles. If you are a beginner, I recommend placing a hand on your belly to feel the movement. It is a fantastic way to clear the system, but please avoid this during pregnancy or if you have high blood pressure.
