Sculptural Staircases: Architectural Designs for Movement and Light
A staircase is not just a connector, it is the pulse of a home. We design them as focal points where light, material, and movement converge to transform a simple transition into an experience of ascent.
This copper and metal staircase is a study in lightness and intensity. The cantilevered treads seem to float, while the glass balustrade offers a glimpse of the traditional 'pichwai' relief art on the wall, lit by a skylight above.
In this Delhi farmhouse, the staircase landing is a serene space. A circular skylight washes the area in natural light, highlighting a stunning white bas-relief panel that depicts sacred motifs, turning a simple transition space into a moment of art.
This floating wooden staircase is set against a bed of river pebbles, bringing a natural, Zen-like quality indoors. The design is clean and minimal, allowing the texture of the stone pillars and the warmth of the wood to stand out.
Inspired by the traditional craft of Sanjhi, this laser-cut metal screen and baluster create an innate contextuality while making a contemporary statement. The intricate patterns cast beautiful shadows, adding another layer of detail to the home.
This staircase at the T House is encased in glass, creating a transparent volume that allows light and views to pass through. It reflects the home's design philosophy of listening to its surroundings, in this case a gorgeous Alistonia tree.
For this renovation project, I designed a staircase with perforated metal treads. This industrial detail allows light to filter through, creating an interesting texture against the exposed brick wall, blending old and new.
A staircase offers a dynamic quality, an opportunity to pause and glimpse views unseen. This video showcases the sculptural potential of a staircase, from the play of light through a skylight to the experience of ascent.
This video highlights the dramatic form of a copper-clad staircase. The warm, patinated metal contrasts beautifully with the cool, smooth concrete-finished walls, while integrated lighting on the treads adds a touch of modern magic.
About Sculptural Staircases: The Art of Ascent
We treat staircases as art installations. Whether it is a cantilevered copper step that seems to float or a perforated metal design that plays with light, we approach every build by balancing structural integrity with your home's unique flow. We do not just build stairs. We choreograph how you move through your space.
In our practice, a staircase is an opportunity to define the vertical rhythm of a residence. When we design for a home, we look at how light interacts with the volume of the stairwell. A well-placed skylight can wash a wall in natural illumination, turning a simple transition into a moment of pause.
Materiality is central to this. We experiment with the raw weight of stone, the warmth of timber, and the industrial texture of metal to create balance. For instance, in our farmhouse projects, we often use cantilevered treads to remove visual clutter, making the staircase appear to hang in mid-air.
We also weave in cultural narratives. Using laser-cut screens inspired by traditional Sanjhi patterns allows us to maintain a connection to Indian heritage while keeping the aesthetic contemporary. This approach ensures that your staircase is not merely a utility but a deliberate architectural statement. Whether you are working with a constrained urban layout or an expansive farmhouse, our design focus remains on functionality that feels intentional and visually engaging.
