Architectural Details and Design Concepts
A curated look into my site diaries, custom furniture projects, and the architectural elements that breathe life into a home.
This is the concept for the 'Flow' bench, an object that is simultaneously a seat, a piece of art, and a sensory experience. Its curving form evokes memories of canyons, rivers, and waves on a sandy beach.
Here is the finished 'Flow' bench, presented at a design dialogue. The corten finish celebrates the beauty of the imperfect, the weathered, and the real, in an age that often deifies perfection.
God is in the details. This video shows small excerpts from a home, from the sculptural form of a staircase to the way light falls on a piece of art, showing how these little moments make a whole.
Light is a key element in my work. Here, a beam of sunlight cuts across a double-height living room, highlighting the texture of the wall and bringing the space to life.
This living room is a composition of textures and forms. A large, tray-like coffee table with a geometric leather pattern sits before a tufted sofa, with a bold modern artwork adding a splash of energy.
A quiet corner in a home, with a comfortable plaid sofa against a white-washed brick wall. The simple floating wooden shelves provide a space for books and personal objects, creating a perfect reading nook.
A built-in sofa against a grey lime-washed wall with arched niches. The space is brought to life with vibrant teal and floral cushions, adding a pop of color and personality.
A close-up of the living space, showing the interplay of textures. A concrete-finish sofa is adorned with rich teal cushions, while a sculptural object sits on the modern coffee table.
A cozy corner featuring a small bar setup. The deep teal wallpaper with a subtle pattern creates a moody backdrop, complemented by the warm wood of the bar and the soft grey of the sofa.
This dining space combines modern and traditional elements. Cane-back chairs and a wooden bench surround the dining table, while a mix of track lighting and a decorative pendant provides layered illumination.
About Additional Work & Details
When I design a piece like the 'Flow' bench, it is never just about utility. I focus on the tactile experience, observing how light hits the corten finish or the way the curve of the wood invites you to touch it. These objects are deliberate experiments in materiality, designed to bring a specific rhythm and character into a room.
Architecture is often judged by the macro—the layout, the volume, the footprint. However, I believe the real soul of a house resides in the micro moments. It is in the way a shadow falls across a wall, the joinery of a custom staircase, or the texture of a lime-plastered surface that changes as the sun sets.
My approach to interior design is grounded in this 'listening architecture.' When I work on custom furniture or specific wall finishes, I am looking for ways to ground the space in the land and the people who live there. Whether it is incorporating laser-cut screens inspired by traditional Sanjhi art or choosing local materials like laterite and hand-chiseled stone, every element is a conscious decision.
Clients often ask how to achieve a home that feels both modern and rooted. The answer usually lies in editing, not adding. By removing unnecessary clutter and focusing on a restrained palette of natural textures, I help create environments that allow you to breathe. These snippets from my ongoing projects and site diaries are examples of how these details come together to form a cohesive, quiet sanctuary. Saka Studio
I started Saka Studio back in '99 because I believe architecture should be more than just building walls; it should be poetry. My team and I focus on the subtle, vital details—the way sunlight moves across a floor or how a hand-chiseled stone feels—that truly turn a house into a home.
